New Project - VW Beetle 2003 EV
« on: October 27, 2020, 18:18:00 »
I've got a new project. Converting a 2003 Beetle to electric.

If anyones interested, it's going to have the Inverter from a Gen 3 Prius, a motor from a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV coupled to the existing gearbox. Battery pack will either be from a BMW hybrid or a crashed Leaf ~400v.

I may need help from a friendly forum member with a lathe to turn down the motor shaft coupler once I've welded them together.

If anyone needs any parts related to the engine or fuel systems they'll be available soon.

WOW.

If I can be of any assistance please give me a shout. :thumb:
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Will it need SVA?

I don't think it will need a SVA. Chassis will remain untouched and drive shafts and gearbox also will remain untouched.

I've already got the motor spinning with the prius inverter.

Having watched a load of YouTube I think I have at least a 60% chance of not getting killed.

TLP I think I might need your largest hammer :D

If anyone works at a scrap yard and can source battery packs reasonably priced, I'm all ears.

Talking of life insurance. Turns out my life insurance isn't valid because I ride a motorcycle, and now I need to switch.

Lockdown has induced mania in many, I'm sure.

I sincerely hope you mean switch insurance companies, not modes of transport.

Of course. Their list of extreme activities seems rather tame too. I've ridden to the peak district to go climbing on occasions. Both extreme apparently
I've had worse injuries running.

I've seen an old fridge and settee that would fit in quite nicely with your new garden ornaments.

I have an "acquaintance" in Goldthorpe who is more than happy to leave you similar items for FREE in the middle of the night, just say the word. :thumb:

Good luck with the project. It would be nice to see one of the original Beetles made electric.

Stopped at lights behind a Tesla. When the lights changed and it took off I would never have thought a car could accelerate so fast. I think this will lead to acidents due to most drivers and riders being unaware just how fast these cars are. We pull into the traffic stream after a mental calculation based on experience How far away is an approaching vehicle x how fast is it going x will I be clear by the time it arrives at my location?  Most of us do not yet have these new acceleration possibilities built into out driving reflexes.  You know when you're behind a car at a junction and the driver seems to be waiting until such times as no other vehicle is visibly approaching and you're thinking " oh! come on, get a move on". Well we may all have to learn to drive like that.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.
