Rocks in Belgium - help
« on: September 12, 2011, 21:57:33 »
Hi

Just on day 2 of our Europe trip
Currently sitting in youth hostel in Luxembourg.

On way here a rock (boulder) rolled off the hill I was driving past - and then a loud bang.

Stopping later I found it had hit my exhaust pipe in front of my foot on right hand side. Just below the oil cooler on bottom bend of down pipe.
There is now a rather impressive dent in the pipe

Any ideas if a replacement is available?
How much?
where from?
and is there any specific model or are they all the same or all same after '04 for example...?

cheers

Ian

I wouldn't worry about it until you get back , unless its a very bad dent that's restricting the gasflow . Can you post a pic ?

I wasn't looking to fix it now - just wondered if the section can be replaced and how much that has cost me :)

You can get some dents out by filling the pipe with water and freezing. The ice expands and pushes out the dents. It may take a few cycles to get a large dent out. Worth a try before you pay for a replacement or for a professional to fix it.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

that is a section you can replace- you can one-screw the 2 bolts that hold it onto the front cylinder and the bolt on the joining flange. it should just pop off, but be careful with the bolts into the cylinder- you don't want to damage the threads on the aluminum cylinder head!

I don't know if you can get a separate piece from a stealer, but try a breakers- sv 650 might fit!

I like the freezing option but it might just bend the rest out of shape    but as frez said,

did the same thing to my ybr 125 custom when I went for a bit of an adventure.

There's one on ebay at the moment - buy it now - £45 used. Includes the header for the rear port too.

How long does the warranty last on new bikes. Not to get the exhaust done under warranty, but if my bike has outstanding warranty then I may need to get new fitted by a dealer to avoid invalidating it...

don't worry about the warranty. Just send the bloke a message saying you will pay 25 quid for the front pipe, then get the autosol on it. I'll get it for you if you want.
