Home made heated insoles.
« on: October 04, 2014, 20:43:13 »
Following hot on the heels (see what I did there) of my wonderful challenge of a gear position indicator, I now challenge the skilled amongst us to make heated clothing.

As before, my input will be just finding a vague link to something that I would like, but I'm unable to make due to lack of skill, knowledge and patience.

Gentlemen plug in your soldering irons. :)
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

I reckon mjc could adapt his heated mirror technique. :)

Wire in a controller. My Keis insoles don't have one and they eventually cook your feet!

My keis heated insoles burned themselves and broke. My heated vest was still working last winter.

Should be a simple job, electrically. Actually keeping the resistance wire in place might be past what I can do. Plus I'm still on with the last idea you had.

If I was doing it I'd look at using PWM to vary the temperature. I've still got one of the insoles that works. I can measure the resistance of it tomorrow.

Sounds like another arduino project to me, bigpie! Doesn't the atmega have 4 pwm outputs?

well, now you mention it...

Take 1 cheapy insole, cut to size (or if you're brave/lazy, use the existing ones)

Go here: http://carbonheater.us/ (or if you'd prefer ebay, http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/led-2008/m.ht ... pg=&_from= )

And then here: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-LED-Strip ... 3384a8d1e2

I think you can work out how to combine the three :)

Keep 'em coming chaps, no pressure but we do have a mission in a couple of weeks. :)

Bigpie have you found a use for those wonderful connectors yet?

or, get a BMW and keep your feet on the pillion pegs near the final drive. That should keep them warm :)

That stuff is funky, never seen that before. Nice find.

Might have a play with it. Cannot work out how the wiring attaches though.
Suitable controllers are so cheap on ebay, it isn't worth DIYing.

Looks like a sewing machine would be a good idea, don't think I know anyone that has one.

I wouldn't know what to do with one. :D keis insoles draw 1.3amp so at 12v they have a resistance of just under 10 ohms.

That stuff is 19ohm per meter.  So half a meter across both insoles, in series should be similar.

Found a little more info http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=887651 is this the same stuff used ? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Carbon-Fibre- ... 563ef99627

Whilst dog walking this morning I was also contemplating a heat exchanger from the exhaust or from the cooling system.

Fairly easy, I already have a controller.

Heated socks might be a better idea. With my heated insoles the top of my feet were still cold winter before last.

Socks would work. Several other folk mentioned the cold on top of the foot. What did you think of the carbon tape idea? Am I on the right lines?

Carbon tape is looking to be the way forward. It's almost as cheap as resistance wire. Order some and I'll give help if required. Still need to tweak your voltages.
