sh*t your pants
« on: September 20, 2012, 17:29:09 »
Saw this on the Versys forum..

Its heavily discussed there, as well as in the comments of the youtube link.

Crazy, especially considering it is a 30mph limit

30??  He was going faster than that I am sure!

Lucky boy.  Stupid if he was speeding, but lucky none the less.

Its a 30mph limit, that doesn't mean he was sticking to it!

For me all the signs were there to slow down   red car waiting to turn, why? first thing I think of is something coming the other way. Which means they're likely to come out with restricted view to their right.
Also, hard to tell I know, but it looked to me like the blue car was edging out slowly to get a clear view around the red one rather than just going for it without looking
Very lucky, lets hope he learns from this experience....

Very basic error.  I see this ten times a day - it's a new fashion to use a turning car as cover so that you can come out of your junction.  Should have been anticipated.  Not that it doesn't irritate me.

Fools rush in - better to hang back, observe, stay visible and make escape space.

As Ptarmigan and strommer say, plus there was no sign that the rider had even slowed down from his fairly high (even allowing for camera effects which make it look quicker) speed to assess the situation. If we were watching an in-CAR camera recording, would we have had much sympathy for a car driver driving like that, overtaking at speed in those same circumstances? No imho.

Possibly the red car had flashed the emerging car to give himself room to turn into the street - another dodgy fashion that's gaining popularity...

Loads of mistakes while riding the bike but the main ones are:

* Should keep just to the right of the lane so he can dominate his lane and to be see further ahead to his left
** Should ALWAYS move to the right when coming to junctions. Instead he went to the left of the lane at the junction before the parked red car
* Always anticipate what is going to happen. A parked car, hence a potential hazard. He ignored it.
* Having just missed the collision, he invited loss of control by turning to look back thus for a few moments not having full control of the direction of travel and any potential hazards.
* Always sacrifice position for safety

The fellow says ride safe but has broken almost all the safety rules himself. He desperately needs to go to IAM training runs.
