Today I left Goodwick at 11:00 and rode east. Later on the M4 I found the Severn Bridge is closed. I diverted up the A40, M50, M5, M42, M6, A14, A12, A120. At 393 miles it was almost 40 miles more than the journey out but at least I have "splored" a bit and now know there is a way of avoiding the M25. I had a few stops for petrol, grub and pacing to wear off "numb bum". Still took me 8hrs :15 minutes. The T120 is a changed bike ( since I changed it)....

Yet another blatant "look at me, I'm retired" post. :violence-smack:

@TLP. That, did not cross my mind. However, I will now spend the day ( the whole day) cleaning the bike.  :neen:

BT1100: - I removed the rear suspension linkage to check the bearings. In general, they were all good, except for the lower connection with the suspension unit which was minus the oil seals. Still some grease in there, so a good clean and regrease should save it. Just need to source a pair of seals.
I cleaned the SV and used the last of my bottle of Muc-Off. I find it no better than cheap car shampoo and absolutely no good at removing the oil and chain grease from the swing arm or the wheels. I use WD 40 and "Blitz" paper towel.        What do others use?

Me too. Excellent stuff. I think it was FatRat himself that first introduced it to us?
Available at all good supermarkets, DIY stores (got some from Homebase the other day but paid £1.25....usually £1.00) and The Range.

I'm helping a mate with a '77 Kawasaki Z400 that he was given as a project. It has been sat in a leaky shed for probably 18 years and there's a few signs that somebody's had issues they've not quite managed to fix properly - there's a fair bit of black tape on the loom and some electrics weren't working, like the starter. The bike has a kick start as well so I suspect the previous owner just put up with it.
I was up at his house last night to get an idea what we're playing with and managed to get a spark after one-bodging some wiring, and managed to get the solenoid back operational so we have a starter again.

At that point my mate wanted to go for trying to fire her up, but I suggested we check the contents of the carbs float bowls first and there was what could best be described as creosote in both...! I decided at that point that there was no way this was going to fire & ripped the carbs out to bring back to chez moi for overhauling.

This is after spending a couple of hours this morning with carb cleaner & brushes:

You can still make out the tide mark on the floats:

The jets were absolutely solid with varnish: I've managed to clear them all but there's still a load of mess to get out yet so I've invested in a proper ultrasonic bath big enough to take both carbs as they are, along with some specific cleaning solution. I've another 5 carbs currently in use that it wouldn't hurt to have a little buzzy bath from time to time as well, so this isn't a single purpose buy.

Mr. Nick, this is one of the few places you don't need to justify buying new workshop toys.

I used to have one of the cheapy little ones but burned it out so I've considered getting another ever since. Took me a couple of years to get around to it though.

New ultrasonic bath & proper carb cleaning solution arrived today so the carbs have both been for a little bath. This is what 12 minutes at 60 degrees does once put together again:

They're now back as a pair & awaiting new float bowl seal as the originals have stretched too far:

I'm going to admit I'm pretty damned impressed and I'm now looking for other stuff to do....
