Should I cut them?
« on: June 06, 2021, 20:02:01 »
Having this GIVI tank bag. I like the bag and the mechanism in order to attach it to the tank. it works flawless. But those straps... they are annoying. are they really needed? should I cut them?

I agree with kwackboy. They fasten round the head-stock and stop the bag disappearing down the road if the main fastening fails. Not necessary for the bag to function.

Sure. They are an extra security measure. But they are annoying. Constantly in the way.

Anyone heard of GIVI tanklock failing?

I cut mine, and carried loads of crap in the xs308. No issues, thousands of miles.

Is this the same mechanism?
So far I haven't had any problems with it, although I have only been using this for few hundred miles with heavy contents. However, I know that the previous owner used this for around 10k miles, and I assume he would've trashed it if the mechanism had failed. And it doesn't have any straps to begin with.

Perhaps if your tank bag has additional rings like mine does you could cut the straps and use them only when you've loaded the bag very heavily?

It is the same lock mechanism. Well... cutting them is a one timer. Can't put them back again (-;

Seems I wasn't clear enough. I meant that you could attach them to the bag by wrapping them through the rings, if available.

If the mechanism doesn't seem sturdy enough or you suspect it might fail after cutting the straps (I reckon that might happen eventually in a few years), perhaps you could secure it with a bungee net.

My quick lock givi bag hasn't got one. No point in having a quick release locking ring and then having additional strappage to unfasten too. Sort of defeats the object. Chop the bugger off and be done with it. Usual disclaimer applies. I am a total muppet so don't blame me if your stuff goes bouncing down the road at future date...

Also my point. The lock mechanism gives me two clicks and seems to be hard to release.  When soft or only one click is heard, then probably time to watch out. No idea in having an irritating strap

I've had a Givi Tank lock bag for years and fill it up to the Max (and more) ... The only thing that has given way is the zip. I still have it on my bike every day.... As I am an honorary Yorkshireman and too tight to buy a new one I just use the waterproof cover to hold it together.... Never had safety straps and it never failed (at least 10,000 miles a year in all weathers).
