Title: Rider to pillion simple intercom
Post by: AdvntureSi on August 04, 2023, 20:45:49
So, I know there are lots of fancy ones that can speak to your mate on Mars and make calls, do GPS and make tea at the same time... But being a bit of a techno turd, my hearing isn't what it used to be, my pillion never lifts her visor when saying something to me, etc etc ....
I just want to be able to speak to my pillion with relative ease and without breaking the bank.
If it can connect to Google maps/satnav that would be a bonus but not a must...
The only requirement is not with cables between us, as I guarantee that will last the length of the first trip and get wrenched out.
Anyone recommend something simple, works and cost effective??

In my case, it saves me a bit of pain. Deb can now tell me I should be going slower rather than punching me in the Kidneys!

I use a Cardo Freecom 4+ as it has voice commmands, my partner uses a Cardo Freecom 2+ as she can obviousy use her hands on the controls. System works really well, my only gripe is that if there is no communication between you for a while the units disconnect (probably saves the battery), and you have to then reconnect to speak.

Only use this in the singular style. I find it really good and this is the dual model.
Hope it helps.

I use that with my brother on his bike. No issues with disconnecting and voice commands are great. It'll work fine with rider to passenger.

So using the above , can you and your partner listen to separate media at the same time?

@ Mojo-Jojo, we use the Cardo Scala Rider Team Set Q1. Ours also cuts out if no conversation is had for 5 - 10 minutes but we can hear a 'bleep' when it does. To connect permanently after that my wife presses the button on the front of her headset (we get another 'bleep') & the two units remain permanently connected after that. (I presume it would do the same if I pressed the same button on mine but it's easier for the wife to do it).

@Hugo Magnus, neither of us listen to music when riding but we can connect each headset to our own individual phones (although I put my phone through the Sat Nav first to get the traffic etc) which allows us to use our own phone if we so wished. We've never tried it, but as they are connected by Bluetooth, I presume anything 'played' from the phone would come into the connected headset?

You can play music and you can share music. I've not tried playing different musics with my brother but the phones connect to a different channel to the other headset so should be possible.

we have got a Sena smh5. its the basic one. rider to pillion and my tom tom speaks to me through it. had it for 2 years. been around Europe a few times. batteries last all day.  had a scala cardo before. crap would cut out, and have to stop to turn it on off. and not very loud. couldn't hear it over 50 mph.

Not found our scala crap at all Colin. They've worked very well for years now. The battery will last at least 10 hours, that's the longest we've had them on for, and for a deaf old bastard the volume is good enough, even with ear plugs in!

Thanks peeps..  er.... At 280-330 quid, I shall keep looking.... or not bother..
They may be great but I don't need to speak to her that desperately.  Ha ha ha..
Maybe if one of the other bikes I have for sale goes, I will splash out..
Cheers

Have a look at Freedcon.  Been using one for years with no problems. Decent audio quality and reasonably priced.

Have you looked on E-Bay? There's loads of cheaper ones on there. Even got pairs for around £100.

Yeah, fleaBay, "jungle" site... Anywhere between 35 and 300...
All seem a bit of a gamble.
She won't be on the back much, so will sit in a box for 50 weeks of the year..
(No I don't want to make phone calls or listen to music when on the bike myself and I generally know where I am going so satnav isn't a must)
Hence why I asked about cheaper ones here coz someone's bound have tried something..
Will look at the Freedcon and also seen the Fodsports ones that seem to have good reviews. Both around 100 a pair..
Thanks peeps...

I had a Freedcon before the Cardo. It was OK for listening to music and answering calls but I did struggle to hear calls, and had issues connecting it to an older Cardo G4 unit. But if you had two of them I'm sure they'd be OK for what you were looking for.
If you were riding together regularly, I'd say it's worth investing more money as the new Cardo is much better than the Freedcon but for what you're saying you need it for, it should be OK.

Oh and the £11 wired system hadn't gone in noticed on the bay of fleas...
Almost worth a try, just for the craic.... Ha ha ha...
Thanks again..
