Hello :)
« on: February 04, 2019, 10:47:30 »
Hello everyone,

Long time no post. I thought I'd drop in and post an update for anyone who followed the megathread on my accident just over four and a half years ago.

Brief recap: ploughed into lorry at 50mph. Broke shoulder, four ribs, punctured lung, lacerated spleen, leg gashed to bone, lost top of left foot, and a permanently paralysed dominant arm (no partridge in a pear tree though).

I had shoulder surgery last year as it was discovered my shoulder blade had come off the chest wall as well as coming apart where it joins the collarbone. Had a plate welded in, happy to say that was a big success and the plate has since been removed.

I'm going back to hospital in May for an amputation as I've had no improvement from the nerve transfer surgery and I've had enough of a dead arm (more here) and I can't wait.

Other than that life goes on. Still studying, doing a museum studies masters, after that who knows. Hope you are all keeping well :)

Hev

Wow Hev, it's still not good for you and hard to believe that was 4.5 years ago too.

Keep fighting. You have already demonstrated far more bravery than I could ever have.

Good to hear from you again Heather. Glad to see you are miles above your troubles as usual, it can't be easy.......

Not sure you told us about passing your car test in that adapted car....?

You should be awarded a Master in bravery and determination. Good luck in all you do.  :thumb:
So how's it going so far then?

Great to hear from you. Can you get someone to film your operation so we can all watch?
Joking aside I'm sorry it didn't work out. You are so brave and positive that I'm sure it will all end well.

Don't know you SnowStrom but what a hellish four and a half years you have had, and you still seem very confident towards life, great to hear good encouragement from someone like you. :thumb:

Nice to hear from you Hev.

You are always welcome here, particularly as you were the second worst dancer at the West Wales meet.

Oi! Andy you didn't have to point out my lack of ability on the dance floor.

Nice to see you're still around Hev.
Stay strong and hope everything goes well in May.

Good luck for the operation. I'm still amazed by how positive you were following your accident and it's great to hear you are still positive and not letting it hold you back.

Hello :)

I have had a few lovely messages asking if I had my operation yet as May is nearly gone (topical).

Due to a shortage of operating theatre staff amd the hassle of coordinating two different surgeon teams (I've got an orthopaedic and a tumour surgeon, multidisciplinary all the rage apparently) it got pushed back but assuming it doesn't get cancelled or rescheduled I will be getting rid of my meat anchor on the 27th June.

Will update when I have more news/less arm :)

You could go private, but that'd cost you a leg as well. Annoying delay when you've resolved on such a seemingly drastic course of action, but you seem like the kind of person who can deal with that. Your strength and focus puts most of us to shame, even continuing with - and excelling at - your studies at a time when I for one would have thrown the academic towel in and sat crying in a corner.
We only met once, and from that brief meeting I sensed you to be a remarkable lady. The very best of luck with your surgery and post-op recovery and adjustment to the new life. If anyone can do it I'm sure you can.

Hi,
I have not had the pleasure of meeting you young lady, but you clearly are a strong individual - both mentally and physically.  I wish you all the best and keep us informed as to how your surgery goes. Major strides have been made in the development and adaption of replacement limbs and I would not be surprised if you get yourself back on a bike sometime in the future.
