I had one as well Martin, I received it for my 11th birthday. :lala: I managed to bend the frame round the headstock by landing badly from ever increasing heights. :bawl:

I think I was a bit younger, maybe 8, and managed to face plant over the Handlebars after "accelerating" down into a subway and getting a violent tankslapper on the non-existent tank.

I knocked myself out and have forgotten 20 minutes of my life. There are other 20 minute periods I would like to forget too, but no such luck there.

I scabbed over my nose and mouth for two weeks and I still have a scar from my nose to my top lip.

My local bike shop owner refused to stock them. Said they were unsafe and gimmicky. I really, really wanted one. They were thirty quid, very expensive. I was given a single speed Hercules Balmoral instead. In Brunswick green. It was eleven quid, normal bike price. Thanks, dad.

My Chopper suffered from a steering failure due, no doubts whatsoever, to frequent jumps: the bars were no longer connected to the front wheel by anything more substantial than hopes & prayers - makes your cycling proficiency test an instant fail when bars suggest right & wheel says 'nah, I like it over to the left'...
My dad found a set of Vindec High Riser handlebars that were even better than the originals as they were adjustable for reach. So, instead of ape hangers, I ran with the bars swept back, which kept my gentleman's area away from the instant vasectomy disguised as a gear lever. I kept that bike for many years until the often brazed frame just cried enough.
It was the cause of missing time for me also - I tried to climb the big hill in the village but kept at it longer than sensible before bailing, resulting in a tarmac:head meeting that I have zero recollection about, and for quite some time afterwards. At least I was blissfully unconscious, unlike my poor mum who had her son delivered by a neighbour, looking a little bit dead. Got a few nights in the local hospital as a treat though.

The Chopper was an ideal tool for delivering newspapers on. I fastened my "paper bag" to the handlebars which was fine for 51 weeks of the year, the week when the Christmas Radio Times came out and overloaded the bars resulted in the inevitable "off".

@Rusty, they looked cool, ace, fab etc but they were terrible things to ride, your Dad did you a favour.

I won one in a kids spot the difference competition. My dad wouldn’t let me keep it so he traded it for a Dawes 5 speed ‘racer’ at the local cycle emporium. ###
