Luggage VStrom 1000 2018-19 Aluminium advice
« on: January 17, 2019, 19:49:05 »
Hello all, I'm about to buy my first 1000 VStrom after having numerous Versys. I have bought the two pack luggage as looking to put a bigger Givvi on the back.
I have noticed that the Suzuki side luggage only allows 38 litre Suzuki top box. Anything wider and the top of the panniers are too high and would baulk sides of top box.
Is there any kit that would higher the top box and thus allow a bigger 58 litre top box or am I stuck with the 38 litre Suzuki box?
Your help is much appreciated Tonybro

Hello Tony,  don't forget to pop over to the intro section and say hello on there.

To answer your question, I would expect that you are going to have to get creative in the garage to make some spacers. I can't understand why Suzuki has chosen to mount the panniers so high up, but that is what they have done. I agree about the having too wide a top box being a PITA as that is the situation I'm in with my bike...! Take care when making your spacers though, as putting extra weight too high up could upset the balance of the bike and to open the lids on the panniers you may have to mount the box quite a long way up to clear the lids.

Is dropping the Pannier Rails a viable option?

The side boxes have to be positioned high to clear the dustbin sized silencer. This inhibits the size of the top box. Suzuki forgets this is an adventure bike and sacrifices much needed luggage capacity rather than design a more compact silencer.

If they're going to mount the cases so high, maybe they shouldn't have made the cases top openers.

Many thanks to all of you that have responded. Its not just me then? Never keen on too much engineering although in this case would have expected anyone that had a working knowledge of adventure biking might have considered these issues. Cheers Tonybro

In fairness to Suzuki    :icon_exclaim:  The rear subframe can only take so much weight and the further back it is the greater the fulcrum effect. So a well filled BIG BOX on the rack added to the side boxes and a pillion passenger may be just too much.  On my Glee with three large boxes I had to wind the rear pre-load all the way up to keep the front wheel on the road.

I don't think anyone told user650 that. Oh I forgot, he has crash bar boxes to keep his front wheel on the floor!

In respect of body work and fitting. It is fairly common that 650 gear fits 1000 as primarily putting engine aside both are same chassis and fittings?
