Changing exhausts V-Strom DL1000 2008
« on: November 30, 2022, 21:22:07 »
Hi everyone.
I'd like your opinions on whether it's worthwhile changing my exhausts for new lighter ones? Does it really benefit the handling when manoeuvring aswell as when riding. Particularly looking at the  osts.
Thanks Paul

Maybe a daft suggestion but try strapping a weight roughly similar to the stated saving onto your pillion seat and see if you feel it. I certainly know if I've got more than a couple of kilos in the top box, even if that is slightly higher up.
Mine came with aftermarket cans so can't comment directly to the change though I'm afraid.

If the OEM system's in good nick, I'd keep it on at least for now. Weight saving versus "osts" is down to your own personal considerations. Throw decibel delight and putative power gains into the equation, it really comes down to "do I want this?" Versus "can I get away with sneaking this into my Xmas stocking?'"

Often changing to after market cans would require the installation of some sort of fuel managment add-on system. This would be an extra cost over and above the cost of the replacement exhaust that needs to be considered if you don't already have a unit installed.
Most fuel management units are either in the form of a power commander / yosh box / fuel tuner pro / etc.   Add to that the time taken in setting up / loading the correct mapping of the fuel management system to suit your new exhaust.

It can be costly depending on which silencers you buy plus, the potential running issues and upgrades to cure them that come with the modification.

However, from my experience, once set up, the difference in power delivery was very noticeable, not mention the weight saving which,  from memory,  equated to both new silencers being lighter that one OEM silencer.

As the two OEM silencers were very heavy, I think it was around 8-10kg weight saving in total.

To echo Kwakaboy there is a significant weight saving not to mention a change in tone & volume, which may or may not be what you are after. Zero adjustments are required, but I did have the fuelling on mine tweaked a bit with a Yoshi box which made it rather brisk. Especially as I'd removed the secondary throttle butterflies which removes the 5th & 6th gear restriction. Just make sure you have V rated tyres if you go down that route as you will see some large numbers on the speedo...

Ahem, in Germany of course. Definitely not in rural Northumberland...

Just to add...

My K6 1000 had Titanium Akrapovic silencers, secondary butterflies removed and a power commander with a custom map.

With a fork brace and handling upgrades it got a bit out of shape at speed , it's not supposed to go that fast .. !

My K7 has Mivv carbon cans which are very light, no other fuelling or performance alterations, barring a K&N air filter, and she seems to run fine for a bike of her distinguished vintage. I've left the secondaries in but balanced both sets as fussily as I can and she pulls well enough for my limited talents.
The old Vee does sound bloody good if I do say so though so don't limit your justification to weight alone 😉

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. There's more to it than I thought. I'll look into the matter more closely.
Cheers all 👍

If you are simply looking for a louder exhaust and you are on a tight budget, perhaps the alternative is https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=32900.0 or google peashooter mod
Some of those riders who did the mod, have found the peashooter mod not to their liking, have reversed the mod as discussed in https://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,16195.0.html
If you have the tools and work space, have a look at http://www.raceratb.com/austin/car/vstrom/muffler.htm
