Test ride today
« on: July 23, 2022, 09:56:12 »
After a bit of cajoling by a couple of my mates I have been persuaded to take a BMW R1250GS Adventure out for a test ride. I last took out a GSA in 2008 and absolutely hated it (goofy indicators, instability, flat gutless motor, etc) so I'm not overly optimistic. I have been told all of my previous concerns have been addressed so we'll give it a whirl. I had a sit on a standard GS last weekend and they are surprisingly tiny, so the larger GSA seems to fit the bill (I'm 6'2 1/2"). In many ways I hope I don't like it as this could be an expensive day out...

I shall report back later on today.

To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Leave you wallet at home just incase.
Last time I rode a Boxer it wasn't good. That was a new 2014 RT. It felt and rode like a two wheeled tractor.

Well that was an interesting test ride. The GSA has come a LONG way since my last test ride way back in 2008. The motor is now an absolute peach and revs like a horizontally opposed twin shouldn't, with loads of grunt everywhere. The goofy indicators are gone, the suspension is remarkably normal and rides very smoothly and the brakes are mega - best rear brake I've ever used. It's comfy, the riding position is OK and could be easily tweaked with a set of bar raisers to be near perfect and the seat is very comfortable. The screen is way too small for me, like all bikes so I can forgive it that. Again, and aftermarket option will (should) sort that out as there are literally hundreds out there. If you think this is all going too good to be true, well there is a fly in the ointment. It's the gearbox, a bit notchy on the way up, horrific on the way down. The 'shift assist' isn't very good and not a patch on the Triumphs. Downshifts require use of the clutch (it is an up & down quickshifter) and a hefty stamp. This will get tiresome compared to the silky smooth Triumph gearbox and shift action. I have been offered a longer test ride rather than just two hours so I may take them up on that to see if things improve with time ? As it stands the tigger is going nowhere !

I am glad you enjoyed it, that was a really good review. Do you need to road test the new 1200 Tiger next?

Not forgetting the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S  :stirpot:

How many miles did it have ? .

I've a few customers that have 1250s and they've said the gearbox is "clunky" but gets better the more miles you do ..

BMW don't know how to make a gearbox but there is a way to treat them. Put a little pressure on the lever in the direction you want to change, up or down then clutch in and with a little more pressure it will slot right in.

I had a BMW 1150GSA that needed a new gearbox at about 17,000 miles. It was free and they gave me a loan bike for the day. The new gearbox was a lot better but, 17,000 mile?

Just shy of 1000, still not had it's first service apparently.

I am glad you enjoyed it,

Thank you, I may take a new tigger out for a spin as the dealer has been bothering me. KTM are too far away (71 miles) and it's got a chain...

When I read "cajoling by a couple of my mates" I thought,  "misery likes company".   lol
However, you have to try out stuff even if only to prove you've already got what you want.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Glad you enjoyed your test ride, sounded like it was OK apart from the gearbox, as others have said the gearbox may free up with more use ?
As they have offered a longer test ride good idea to take them up on there offer and see how that goes ?
I have seen that Triumph have been Advertising the new Tiger 1200 on Television and looks very Good, and that is also a very good reason to take the new Tiger 1200 out for a test ride?
Very interested in finding out your views after riding both bikes  :thumb:

I'm going to take a couple more bikes out over the coming weeks. Oddly, I will be trying out a Tenere 700, mostly because the dealer is 1 1/2 mile away from my house. I do suspect that I may have more arse than it has seat however...

Like The Dr. said, pre loading the lever can help on many bikes to smooth out changes, just takes a little practice to get it right.
2112, my arse would look like saddlebags on a Tenere.
So it seems the new Boxers have sweet engines?

I have ridden a GSA and owned a 1200 Explorer. I now also have an R1250RT.

The Tiger 1200 is way too top heavy compared to the GSA which carries its weight quite low.

The Tiger engine is easier to live with unless you are really into Boxers.

The deal breaker for me was loading the Explorer onto my trailer - a Motolug- just too much of a risk with the weight and height. I swapped to a couple of Tiger 800s which were fine, as I hope will be my soon-to-be-collected Vstrom.

I dare not try the RT yet😱

I agree about BMW gearboxes, but you do get used to them.

Yes, the new variable valve timing 1250 motors are an absolute peach, it's a shame the gearbox is a lemon ! Lots of low down pull, strong midrange and yet still able to give a decent top end punch, very impressive. They probably have a bit more mid-range than my tiger which is very linear in it's power & torque delivery, but the tiger has a bit more in the last 3000 rpm. It fuels very nicely too with a very 'easy' throttle feel and it felt very natural. On my test I averaged 48.7MPG according to the trip computer and as I wasn't hanging around that was impressive. It should easily do 55MPG in more 'normal' use.

Sounds like you had a good ride, and a good honest review.

I look forward to the new tiger review  :thumb:
