Title: Recommended oil for vstrom 1050
Post by: bonne on December 14, 2020, 12:44:08
Going to do the 1.000 km oil + filter change on my vstrom 1050. Which oil (and brand) is recommended for this winter period?

Unless you intend riding in seriously sub zero temps, the same as you use in summer is the basic answer. The manual tells you the standards to look for in the oil, and the grade.

Everyone will have an opinion from the most expensive, to oil from the local chip van filtered through a pair of old tights. More expensive oils generally have better additive packages which is the part that 'wears out' in the oil, but not always. Be led by what you can source easily, and any special deals just now, but the choice is yours.

Halfords own brand is fine - used it on high performance bikes and ordinary ones for years - no issues. If you fancy top Castrol spec - no probs. As above - most oil is OK for all but extreme temps.

Motul is recommended by Suzuki, apparently they were the first oil to be synthetic.

Yup - correct. An oil thread in oil/luberication group.

I bought Castrol 10W/40 rather than Motol 5100. The Castrol is SN where as the Motul is SM, I think... at least lower. Regards, Lars.

I think any advantages that an SN oil has over SM is largely academic given Suzuki specify SG as being suitable for the 1000 (don't have a 1050 manual to verify), and API say you shouldn't use that in any petrol engine built after '93. The JASO MA class also acceptable covers all API since SG as well.
I use Motul 7100 in the KTM and it's SN classified - the cheaper 5100 is SM and the even cheaper 3000 is SL, both of which are fine by some margin if you consider the classes to be a ladder.
