Screen help !
« on: July 01, 2011, 22:20:34 »
Picked my Wee up tonight , riding up the M5 and the buffeting was quite bad . I'm 5'11" , what's the best position for the screen ? and what's the mod with the washers ?

Thanks in advance

The position is less of a big deal than the washers , there's posts everywhere about screen height and the secret higher position, but try the washers, cos you'll want them whatever height you go at...

The screen is held on by 2 screw on each side .

Take the screen off, and replaces the lower 2 screws with slightly longer ones (If you don't have slightly longer, you can still do it a bit, I don't )
Now shove some washers or rubber washers or whatever (with stock screws you'll struggle for more than 2, but still worth it) behind the screen, and then insert and tighten the screws.
Do that for both lower screws, and when finished, tighten the top screws more than the bottom (don't go mental though)

The other BIG deal for buffetting etc is the mirrors. Get Mirror Extenders or Aprilia Tuono mirrors (or both).

I'm 6 ft. On stock highest standard setting +2 washers, with mirror extenders and standard mirrors.

I never have my visor down, unless over about 90 (kph officer)

Worth a try, it doesny cost anything.

I'm 5'8" and the top setting was dandy on the Wee.  Get loads of buffeting on the Vee though, so some fettling is overdue

If you check the manual, you will see they show 3 positions, you can actually put it up one higher than what they show.

I have mine on the secret top position with a 10mm spacer under the lower of the two fixings. Buffetting greatly reduced and is manageable up to 80mph-ish (on a closed test track with a profeshneal rider...honest!) I'm 6'1" and a bit wearing a Caberg V2 407 and a cheeky grin...

The secret top position isn't in the handbook. Or the Kama Sutra..

What sort of longer bolts do I need - I.e. length, name, etc?

I think I used 20mm when I did mine way back, I might have some left. If you're not in a hurry I can check sometime this week, when I remember, and if I can find any I can post them to you?

Hello Juv

Thanks

Ideally need to sort something before Sunday when I'm off to Germany for a week.

Can I get these from Homebase etc?
Do they need to be treated specially ?
Does the M6 dictate diameter?
What washers do I need - rubber?
Oh come back lego you were so easy :)

Can you tell I may not be the best to ask if you need DIY help :)

M6 means the bolt/screw is metric and has a 6mm diametre shaft (see here for more detail.)

It just occurred to me that they can't be M6, that's too thick, has to be M5. I haven't got any proof of this other than knowing my screen bolts are not as thick as my satnav bracket bolts and that the satnav bracket is held in by M6 bolts and nuts (that I am sure of.) Actually, come to think of it, I'm pretty sure that the rubber well nuts on the Madstad are M5 as I bought some replacement ones a few weeks ago and the original screen bolts fit the rubber well nuts on the Madstad so they have to be M5 (if you can understand the logic, I'm "thinking out loud" here.) They have to be M5 going by that  I think I might have become 25/30mm long machine screws, 20mm looks too short when looking at it on a ruler. I used some M6 nylon washers, they weren't ideal because the M6 hole was a little too big (still worked well), but I couldn't find any M5 nylon washers. Rubber ones would work too and if you could find ones that had a slightly wider wall it might help a bit (not too wide though, maybe 3-5mm wide.) Get screws that are either stainless steel or zinc plated, they won't corrode easily. Something like at the below link would do (copy and paste the whole thing, the curly brackets mess it up.)

http://www.diy.com/diy/jsp/bq/nav.jsp?a ... egories%3C{9372015}/categories%3C{9372044}/categories%3C{9372215}/specificationsProductType=machine_screws

If the link doesn't work just seartch http://www.diy.com for "5020789853791" to find it. It's a machine screw with a flat head (not countersunk), M5, 30mm long. There are 25mm ones as well if you think that will work better.

You're half-right Juvecu, the screen to bracket bolts are M5, the bracket to "ooo, the rest of the bike" are M6. I know cos I used a couple of roofing bolts (aka gutter bolts) as a temporary measure. If you're needing to sort it before the weekend I'd taken the screen and bracket off then space between the bracket and the rest of the bike, say 6 - 8 mm under the bottom M6 fixings, tighten up carefully...

Not sure if Tallnick's about, I sent mine to him when I got my Madstad, he may be able to post up a photo as an idea of what I did..

Oh yes, I should have mentioned, I talk about the screen to bracket bolts because that is where I put my spacer washers in. I'd didn't occur to me that you were talking about the bracket to mount bolts :shy:
