That was close.  Reminds me of the comments of  a police officer a few years ago when a motorcyclist hit a deer that jumped out while he was sticking to the speed limit. The biker came off but wasn't too badly injured. The officer said had the biker been going any faster the injuries would have been much more severe, even fatal. I just thought had the biker being going faster he would have missed the deer altogether. In this case, faster would have meant a collision.

Yes unexpected, I once had seven of them all in a line run across in front of me in Norfolk UK but managed to stop.

These things are very very "flighty". A few years ago in Spain I had two encounters with deer in the same year, the first in May was a low speed collision resulting in a broken ankle and the second in Oct, a week in hospital with food poisoning from venison stew.
I avoid them like the plague now.

Had one run out from the local woodland park entrance while I was traveling along the 50mph road.
Cought a glimps of it run down the lane but far too late to do anything about it.

Swmbo riding pillion saw it looked back to see it miss the rear of the bike by inches.
I thought it was going to t-bone us.

A mile later a gypsy van pulled out in front of me.

Two miles further down the road a dog ran out between two cars from a pub beer garden and was 18" away from going under the front wheel.

I pulled over gave the dog's owners a talking to and we decided to call it a day and not go any further that day.

On a side note, I did hit a pheasant in Snowdonia a few years back.
It ran down a field, hopped over the low wall into the road and straight into my reinforced bashplate.
Delicious.

And it's illegal to pick up roadkill you hit yourself... but fine for the bloke behind you to stuff it in you empty pannier.

I had a buzzard do the same to me a couple of years back: it flew across the road from fence to fence with plenty of time, but decided it preferred the original side after all. They're quite big birds when they're only a couple of feet away from your face. Like really f'n big.

   Only had two of these whilst on a bike, when I was 16 (1961) I had a 125 cc Bantam, and was pottering through Bloxwich High St.when a Jack Russell sized dog shot out from between 2 shops and I went over it with both wheels,I screeched to a stop(well on a Bantam you try and stop) but the dog ran off into the churchyard squealing and I never saw it again.Then about 18 months ago about 4 or 5 of us were on a back lane approaching Buxton,came around a corner and there were half a dozen sheep across the road,we all braked and I think nearly everyone blew their horns,the sheep scattered all to the nearside of the road(virtually a single track road),we got going again and with sods law,just after the bike in front of me passed them, they all decided to shoot across to the other side, except one who decided to go when I reached it, it shot towards me and then did that thing that sheep sometimes do and leapt into the air and passed my face by about 2ft.It was the nearest close shave that I think I have ever had on a bike. 👀

When the rider breaks, the beak to mudguard gap closes, as if the strom is try to take a bite out of it ...now where's me tablets
