There have been reports on another forum of unscrupulous sellers not sending goods once payment has been sent. If you choose to buy any item (particularly from a new member) then just be aware, also I would suggest not sending Paypal payments as a gift. If you use this method then you are unable to claim it back via Paypal in the event of being ripped off.

Good Advice
Buy the seller as well as the Item

Another one I saw today (on the Guzzi forum) was about Gumtree ads offering bikes for sale at very good prices. Someone noticed that a Le Mans on Gumtree (Glasgow) for £1200 had just been sold on ebay for £1900. Puzzled, he contacted the vendor who said he was in the States and would ship the bike by US military transport! Hard to believe, but there are some folks out there chancing their arm.
ps. The Gumtree ad was copied direct from the original ebay listing
-
And don't pay by direct Bank Transfer unless you have their address and phone number and have verified these. I am into HiFi and this is rife in the audio world!
-
Yep I was going to buy a VW camper at an amazing price until I was asked to put the money in a Google account before I'd even seen it up close.
She was, allegedly, in a military base and couldn't get out. She was training for Afghanistan for the 3rd and last time lol
When I asked to give money to whoever was taking it over for viewing. It all went quiet.
If it's sounds too good to be true then it usually is.
-
I heard about one through MCN with that bloke working in the military in the states and offerring to ship.
That criminal scum needs to stop...
-
Be careful of turning up to view anything with a wad of cash, it may just be being used to get people to show up with cash so they can mug them.

Just to help you all out, here's a message I got today about a bike I've just sold. This is without a doubt a scam e-mail (I used to frequent anti e-mail scam boards in a previous life, so stuff like this just screams scam to me).
> HELLO SELLER,

Beware of anyone offering to overpay and either let you keep the balance or use the extra to pay the shipping company on their behalf. A little Googling will tell you a lot more about this type of scam and do it more eloquantly than I can. ###

There was an advert on a Denver Colorado list for Givi E45 side cases that had this picture with it.

That's a picture I took of my old bike with E36 side cases.

This is what happens when you post pictures on the net. It is free for all to use.

They're still at it. My eldest son was most impressed with my glee and started looking for similar on gumtree.
A very clean wee with full luggage in gorgeous orange was listed at an attractive price
just 20 miles away. An email to the seller prompted a response stating viewing wasn't possible as she was working away, but....
She would list the bike on ebay for a buy it now price and pay carriage to him at the listed price.
A no viewing, no buy response has seen no reply.
The scam is to get the buyer to transact via paypal on ebay. No goods are received. The seller gets the money and the buyer is left claiming back from paypal, if they're lucky.
The ad has been removed from gumtree. Their investigations showed it to be listed from usa.
-
If you buy a vehicle off of ebay be aware that Pay Pal's buyer protection does not apply, so if you get scammed buying a bike you won't get anything back.

I have always been careful with ebay and PayPal because of scams, however I have bought and sold without problems so far and so may it continue. In fact I bought my V-Strom off ebay and all went well. Just be very careful, have those discussions and check their feedback and details before parting with your hard earned cash!! :thumb:
-
I have had no trouble buying off ebay but I always go and look at the bike first and collect and pay at the same time if I like it, but I never say I have the cash with me and it is never on my person, you can normally smell a rat if something is wrong, just walk away.
-
The very same thing happened to me on a BMW forum. Sound advice indeed, nothing worse than paying and not receiving.
Alistair.

The only thing these scam ads work on is greed so, if something is too good to be true it usually is.
There's been a DL650 on Gumtree around these parts that comes and goes under a different name, great pics, seamless history, should be 3k all day long, listing is £1,700.....you just know.
