Black Widow assembly advice needed.
« on: September 03, 2020, 20:04:10 »
Just arrived - Black Widow 300mm silencer with all pipes for my 2020 DL650. No instructions! Did my Glee with a Fuel system - very similar but forgot if I used any silicone on any of the joints (they include fire gum which is pretty useless). So shall I just carefully bolt up together or add a bit of silicone on the inside of joints? What say you?  Thanks

Think I just smeared silicone on muffler joint. Won't harm on all joins I suppose.

Why is asking the manufacturer not an option? They should be best able to advise you on their products. It would be my first port of call.

Always use silicon on clamp type exhaust joints,it stops the black exhaust gas mark on the pipe if the joint weeps.

Thanks Ian Mc. :thumb: I've tried the system loosely and yes, I will add silicone on male end of tubes with clamps when I do final tightening. What about the spring held 'y'pipe joints ? Not sure about these. Do you recon to keep front header loose while assembling the rest or bolt up first? Thanks for input.
Tallpaull I'd rather follow advice from a member whose fitted before rather than a company who omits to put in instructions! Although to be fair, the Black Widow stuff is well made and lines up correctly on the DL.

Leave everything loose until you have it all in the correct position. Then start tightening at the front and work backwards.

Fitted and ridden today - pictures and maybe video soon. Went well, with just a tiny gas leak which a bit more silicone and extra clamp tightening sorted. Loud with the baffle out. I think I prefer the sound with the baffle in at the moment.

Surely you need a high heat resistant silicone to seal the exhaust?     Any recommendations on which ones?

The jury is out on whether high temp stuff (Halfords do one)  is much better than ordinary one used for windscreen sealing etc. I  used regular silicone on an exhaust before and it seemed OK.
