2020 1050XT - loose RW spokes
« on: May 10, 2022, 21:08:15 »
Just took the strom out of the garage for a chain clean - to be honest been hardly used and only 4000 miles on a late 2020 plate - only to find I have 4 spokes uber loose happily rattling around on the RW. (front seems fine).

RW seems just a touch out of alignment as she spins on Centre stand. Any ideas how to correct - or should I get dealer to sort as shes still under warranty?

If it has two wheels.. I'll ride it.

Unless you know what you're doing, I'd resist the urge to try straightening it yourself as it's as easy to turn the wheel into a 50p piece as it is to fix it.
I'm not sure spokes coming loose is a warranty issue: the spokes aren't defective as such. Worth a try though.

I wouldn't touch it even if I was an expert, I would take it back to the dealer who will (hopefully) put it right and I expect they will let Suzuki know of the problem too.

If enough people have the same fault then a recall could be in order but if nobody tells their dealer, they would never know. Just my humble opinion. Good luck with it  :thumb:.

OK took the rear wheel off for a proper inspection. Now I'm steaming mad.  :dl_soapbox:

9 repeat 9 loose spokes that move freely and rattle - one is so bad it has come detached from nipple in the hub and is missing the nipple.  Mileage 4007, last service 2 weeks ago at 3700 in dealership. I'd love them to explain how 9 spokes suddenly workled themselves so loose in 300 miles - when checking them is a service item afaik.
I don't bump kerbs, don't go off-road and don't ride it particularly hard either - ( I have other toys for that :))

Rest assured the bike (nor I for that matter) will be going back there.

Lesson learned - don't buy bikes with spokes, and if you do check them before every ride.

This 'one will be traded in next July - maybe something different this time.   :traitor: :traitor:

I'd complain to whoever serviced it and if not happy with their response would complain to Suzuki. You've paid good money for a service and you should expect better.

I agree I would definitely be going back and if I didn't get a groveling apology I'd start quoting the Consumer Rights Act 2015: Supply Of Services: 'The service must be carried out with reasonable care and skill' etc etc.

Sadly in my experience, neither is likely to listen or if they do - act beyond platitudes. Thankfully another dealer has sympathised and offered to squeeze me in for a fix this weekend. I'll post a vid soon to show just how bad this looks.

Oh and the symptoms - should anyone else get the experience - I noticed a weird extra vibration from the drive train after a 30 mile ride out last weekend. Only occured pulling away - mostly lower gears when under load - crusing was fine, engine ran fine when clutch pulled so knew it was drive related. Chain was a bit mucky, suspected stiff link first - so cleaned the chain then discovered the horror.
