Pinlock
« on: March 01, 2021, 09:19:00 »
How well does your pinlock work? Below 10 Celsius, I get fog inside the screen after maybe 15 min. driving.

I wear glasses (if this makes any difference)

It's not perfect for me, but definitely an improvement over what it's like without.

I'm with StromGeeza - definitely much better than nothing. Have you checked yours is properly adjusted? The mounting pins are eccentric and can be adjusted to ensure the Pinlock screen seals tightly against the visor.

I find mine has it's limits but doesn't really become a major pain until just above freezing or in heavy rain. Closing vents or wearing any kind of buff which restricts airflow has the biggest negative effect. A nose guard helps a great deal by directing humid breath downwards. There are different grades of Pinlock as well (30, 70 and 120) and sometimes the ones supplied with helmets are at the lower end of the range, the higher the number the better the fog resistance. I also find storing my lid indoors so it's not stone cold when I put it on helps reduce fogging, and is just generally nicer.

Pinlock allows me to keep my Arai visor closed for my entire commute, even in the coldest days.

Took my pinlock out of my go to work helmet and invested in some Bob Heath visor spray, 3 weeks so far, very little steaming up. Even good for glasses  :thumb:

When I bought my first pinlock fitted helmet the shop had a pinlock advisor. She told me how to remove and clean it in plain water with a soaked multi fibre cloth and then blow as much water as possible off with air dryer, then leave to completely dry.
She said on reassembly the most important part was the silicone bead on the pinlock that needs to sit back in the same place and then the cams to be tightened as much as possible to squash the two together.
I think this last bits the trick as I forgot to tighten it one clean and it fogged up straight away. As soon as I stopped, let it unfog over a coffee stop and then tighten it, no more fogging.

At first, no it was not adjusted. I went back to the dealer, and he adjusted it for me. But afterwards, it is still not perfect.

Different grades? Mine is the one that came with the helmet (Nolan n100-5), but I bought an extra. Just took a look at it, and nothing indicates the numbers you are referring.

I'm not certain all grades are available for all helmets, you may need to ask Nolan. I know my friend had issues with his lid and the manufacturer sent him a 120 insert to replace the 70 fitted as standard and he said it made a difference, but that was a different manufacturer.

The helmet I was talking about in my post above was a Nolan N103 and the pinlock that came fitted was fine for 8 years. Just now replacing a Nolan N104, after five busy years, and that one’s pinlock has been great too.
They came ready fitted on purchase, I’ve just bought a Caberg Levo and the pinlock is loose in the box so will be interesting to see if this one, fitted by me, is as good.
The only time I have had any fogging, in the pinlock area, was when I left it loose after cleaning which, as I said, rectified itself as soon as I tightened the cams up.

I have a few issues with it fogging up a bit but swmbo has a cheapy lid but the pinlock actually sits in a recess in the visor... no problems what so ever, don't know the make off hand though

Still the best solution in my experience.
