DL1000 ECU Flash

Here is the edited highlight of what will be a longer article ...

2016 DL1000
Replaced the air filter with K&N
Replaced the end can with Delkevic
The bike is way smoother to ride. Roll on and off the throttle without any lumps, bumps or pauses while the exhaust clears itself
Tour of Scotland (just got back) and the end can joint with the link pipe was blowing slightly - black soot looks rich
Every fuel stop I was 3-4 litres more than the Africa Twins
Power Commander map or Fuel Controller - Parkit Engineering says neither - not required.
ECU can be flashed - bring it in and we'll run it on the dyno and map it out for mid-range torque and fuel economy while leaving it a little rich when you give it the herbs

Bike goes in on the 30th ... I'll let you know.

Interested in anyone comments though. I've seen posts about send away exchange ECUs but always thought generic maps would never be as good as a few hours on a dyno.

Recently had my 650 done and it's made a bigger difference than I expected.  Definitely worth having a bespoke map done.

Mine was £350 and would have been the same if it were a 1000 too.

Longer answer is coming, I need to write the article ...

Short version

£385 inc VAT

  • V-Strom was very rich 11AFR overall (Lower the number the more fuel is present)
    Fueling cleaned up and mixture corrected - Target value for a V-Twin would be 13 AFR, mine is now 13.4AFR overall and 14 at cruising speeds
    Emission Step in the throttle bodies removed
    Tried removing the Deceleration Fuel Cut for added smoothness, but this caused blue flames out the exhaust. Not recommended useless you have sausages
    Mapped the exhaust servo value to open earlier in 4th 5th & 6th

Result - Better fuel economy (long run required) 2 more BHP and 2 more foot LBS of torque -- not that I was looking for that

Measured on the dyno at  90.51 BHP and 64.9 foot lbs - can't find the factory figures in the handbook

I found the official figures -- 98.5BHP and 76 ft.lbs - Factory figures at the gearbox sprocket

Assume 5%-10% loss to get to the rear wheel and I should be seeing circa 90 bhp & 70 ft.lbs whereas I'm getting 90.51 bhp and 64.9 ft.lbs. Power is about right but torque is down further.

The bike is still epic and now slightly more epic than it was this morning :)

The V-Strom is great fun as standard, but if you tweak it to make it your own, an ECU map is that perfect finishing touch.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading your thoughts and experience of ECU flash. Your riding impressions and results mirror my feelings after having my KTM "flashed". Flexibility and refinement were the biggest improvements I felt, though the the extra mid range  push at 6000 to 9000 rpm is very exhilarating and intoxicating.

MPG is very acceptable still for a 1200cc V twin, motorway slogs see 60 mpg, progress on A and B roads sees mid 40's to low 50's.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Now if only I could get the V-Strom to 60mph on a motorway ... perhaps if I slowed down a bit  :angry-banghead:
