That might throw a few but my bike went for it's first Controle Technique today, yes MOT test.

It's the French version designed to align with minimum standards across the EU. Some of you will be familiar with the FFMC or Féderation Française des Motards en Colère (Angry French Bikers) who protested long and hard against it. Well after many years of proposals and put backs the Law finally came into force in April this year giving all motorcyclists (scooters, mopeds, three wheelers and quads etc. riders) until the end of the year to present their machines for test. It proved quite difficult at first as there were no testing centres or trained testers until the end of the Summer and most car testing stations have taken the work on.

The test itself comprised of mainly visuel checks, identification, tyre sizes/pressures, lights of course, horn, brake disks and pads, front steering and forks, shock absorbers, chain play and condition and rear sprocket. There was no real moving brake test or ridability check other than activating pedal and lever at very slow speed, so yes he sat on it. The longest aspect was on emissions at tick over and 4k revs.

He presented me with a test paper which stated only the emissions printed and drew attention to the vast space reserved for faults and degree of seriousness completely void. At the end he said my bike was like brand new. I parted with 67 € (55 of your £££££'s) and no need to return for three years. The GPX is five years as it's a registered collection bike.

Yes pb, long time since you were here. I remeber the CT being talked about in 2003 but like many French things it takes time to be thought about seriously then the usual macho refusal by the FFMC claiming that very few road accidents are caused by mechanical failure and 'nous motards' know how to look after our bikes. Pollution and illegal upgrades of smaller machines were the main target amongst all the reasons. An example of what they're trying to stamp out would be my GPX when I bought it as a project; the chain was brand new but not cut to length so drooped on the swing arm, brake pads were at limit on the front and worn wonky on the rear, the gear selector pedal fitted loosely in the side casing (read broken inside) and the exhaust was a total botch of welding. It was still being ridden on the road. I bought it off a twenty something chap who illegally owned it as he had no permit to ride it so he hadn't done the paperwork on it either!

The Doctor 46, yes it's very generous even allowing for the simple fact it's only seen as correct at the time of the test like the MOT. I think it was appeasement to bikers to resemble something given away.... you know 'it could have been worse'. Even the car CT is every two years. Apart from any mechanical or safety offence etc. you would only be fined if you weren't carrying current cetification. At the moment no CT does not invalidate your  insurance. I'm not sure if it's even recorded in the vehicle/insurance database, if not I'm sure it will come.
