Copilot can it be removed from a PC?
« on: April 16, 2024, 10:41:23 »
This thing jumped up on my screen and started waving at me like a three year old wanting attention. Some invasive microsoft thing trying to scoop up my data and sell it off to the business world.
"ask me a question" it demanded
I wrote why don't you F*** off and leave my PC alone
It replied " I'm sorry to hear that you feel that way. I'm here to help with your windows 11 experience."  ( I could almost hear the voice of HAL at work although it has not yet called me "Dave".)
It still sits in the corner of the screen and I'd like to shut it down completely.
Can it be got rid of?
It has not put up a message " it might be time to move onto a new topic. Lets start over."   The only relationship I'll ever have with a PC is when it warms me by the fire I just put it in.

Have you asked it the question "How do I get rid of Copilot from my PC?"

Sorry Dave.
I believe to get rid of it you may have to do it through the registry settings. Something I wouldn't advise unless you are reasonably knowledgeable about things PC.

Follow the chain below and that should sort it:
Start / settings / personalisation / task bar / set 'Copilot (preview)' to off

You can delve into the registry and various other more complex areas of Windows. But the above has completely sorted it for me.
My main problem with copilot is it is underdeveloped and released too soon.

I keep refusing the windows 11 update. Windows 10 for this idiot.

You can't uninstall it as it's a feature of Windows 11, well you can, but that'll mean editing the registry which can be quite complex, but you can tell it to sod off

Right click the task bar (bar at bottom of screen)
    Taskbar settings
Under taskbar items drop down section, uncheck the box next to "Copilot"[/li]

 :fix:

I was against Windows 11, but having had a new works laptop forced upon me, I've got used to it.
BH I'd change now, and have switched to Windows 11 on all my home computers, - Next year (October) is the end of general support for Windows 10.

I have:
A windows 7 Samsung mini laptop thing that never connects to internet but still has "movie maker" .
A windows 10 HP laptop thing that cannot handle windows 11  but that I Use for social media stuff only
A windows 11 desktop that has no social media content.
A windows 7 clone desktop that has no internet access and is used for music and photos. Not as good as and old Win 7 as it won't run all of the old Win 7 programmes.

My desktop and laptop both handle Windows 11 natively, but the mini desktop I bought to use as a media centre is too old to upgrade to Windows 11, so I cloned the laptop and it runs windows 11 absolutely fine. (Intel i5-6500U based system and same as my old work unit)

Even the old 2007 laptop I have runs Windows 11 without complaint - I only did it to test the theory with a spare SSD.
It's some of the hardware based security features your would be lacking, on a HDD it would be very sluggish and take ages to start, but SSD's are far faster and breath new life into older systems.

Windows Movie maker was a great little tool, I prefer Adobe Premier Pro for the extra features but it's overly complex for simple editing.
