hi folks, some q's
« on: September 27, 2012, 21:41:21 »
hi so I'm thinking about getting a big vtwin.  I like the look of the dl and I like suzukis.  I've got a 30yo old gs550 with a 15yo gsf/ gsxr hybrid motor and running gear but I want a twin so I've got more power without revving the titsoffit..

I also like touring with pillion and I like that the dl has the luggage, fairing and comfy pillion without any mods.

but I could do without the fairing riding around london..... wat does it look like when you take the front off ? can't find any pics anywhere

Wouldn't crash bars be an easier way to achieve the same thing?

I would be more concerned with all the electrical stuff being exposed with no protection

like martin said phil, its pretty ugly already..... it   might be an improvement witha single round light !

crash bars are going on anyway loggamat but wouldn't help the fairing get knocked about by car / van mirros filtering through the london traffic or by the gate and wall it has to go round when I put it to bed.

Yep travelingstrom, it would require some playing about with the loom and relocating components I'm sure.

thanks for the input blokes ! :thumb:

It's an Americanism filter, naturally.

Take the fairing off? Of all the suggestions I've seen on here that's got to be the daftest.

You are right of course, Martin. I take the accusation back. (Although I'm still not convinced it wasn't a spoof)

why ? cos it'll get trashed - like I said already twice

why would I buy another naked bike - I've got one

its about finding a big v twin, with good pillion, tank range and luggage potential.

thing is I can't imagine getting that fairing through the gaps in the traffic here. ergo take it off. jees some people have no imagination.... :fix:

(awaits flames)  :welcome2:

might just buy a mille, add futura seat and luggage..... :auto-dirtbike:

Yes, makes sense. And you would have to fit the handlebar shortening kit as well.

I ride one round London.  Fairing is fine, legs stick out further (it's not a sticky out fairing) crash bars even further.

I filter every day, it's not bad but it's not scooter small.

If you do want to skinny the bike then google for "thinstrom" or "blacklab strom" - black lab is a yank who has gone skinny, thinstrom is a project that a few have done.

Oh, and I found this:  http://stromtrooper.wikispaces.com/Special+V-Stroms

Good Luck.

So, I bought mine from Metropolis Motorcycles at Vauxhall. Not sure I'd recommend them to buy the bike from as I had a few issues... However, they're right in central London and have a demonstrator. So why not take one out for an hour in London and see how you get on with it? You might find it's not as big as you think.

I have to get mine through a pretty narrow pedestrian gate to park it, and was really worried before I bought it that it wouldn't fit. I think because it's so tall and long it tricks the eye into thinking it'll be really wide too. But it turns out, no problems getting it through the gate.

So, I'd say give filtering a go on the demo (though be a bit careful! £1000 excess to pay if you damage it!) before you get too wedded to the idea of stripping the fairing off.
