Michelin Road 6 wear?? 2014 1000
« on: April 07, 2024, 23:28:23 »
So.. nearly 2k on the Road 6.. the rear has a noticeable flat spot developing..
Apart from a single run down the A1 in the summer and back to Stevenage, and all local A roads in Lincolnshire, I find it very odd..  riding style no different to my Varadero, which has Avon Storms on, that has covered 4k in ownership with a few long motorway runs.. it hasn't got a noticeable flat spot..

I am off to France and Spain at end of May, is this bugger going to be worn out by the time I get there?
Pressure are the stock 36/42
Some 2 up riding..
I do krank it over in the corners.. (mindful of spanking it in a straight line).

Not got a 1000,but reading what others have got tyre life wise, yeah, you will need a new one before the trip.Keep the partworn for an emergency back up.

I use road 6s ,but on a 650,and don't get any squaring off ,it seems to wear evenly, right down to the wear markers. The 650s run 33 front, 36 rear solo...maybe that is why?

That sounds about right to me. I've never used the 6 but the road 5's, trail or standard never lasted  me more than 4k miles.  Always got 5k from a road 3 or 4 and 6-7k miles from a Bridgestone a40-42.
I really like the Michelin road's but the high price and low mileage is the reason I'm now on Pirelli angel gt's.

Can't fault the grip and confidence, was tested on Sunday with he Dave Myers memorial run..  wasn't hanging about on the run up and the run home, encountered cool dry, warm dry, damp roads, wet and dry patches, lashing rain, with a howling wind all day..
4k.... Frell.. it's not like it's a sports bike..  Sure my bro was getting 4k using road attacks on his BMW 1000r hyper sports thingy.
Couldn't get the Avon Storms of the Bridgestone at the time,  ah well..  A41 or conti road attack 4 next time.
Looks like another Road 6 for the trip and bang this one back on to finish it off after.  Bloody expansive trip considering .

Should work OK, I did run a road 5 trail front with an older (but new, if you get me) road 2 rear.  Worked just fine, couldn't tell much difference really.

May work, but is an expensive gamble, I have mismatched tyres before and it was fine but I went from a bridgestone bt 16 pro to bridgestone s20 on my fazer1000 and that did not work at all .I would stick with a new road 6 for the trip, then change both at a later date. Also having a mismatched pair it is another thing for nosy European officials to get their teeth into.
I'm not paranoid ,they are out to get me.

Yeah.  Could be no better...
Prob just fit a another R6 and wear that out on the trip..

Tyre pressure seem to be a very subjective thing on forums.. some say stock, others say, loads of other numbers.
Currently don't have a trusted tyre bloke to bounce it off..
Been running the stock 36/42, apart from the wear, not had any other concerns.

I run 36/42 on my 1000, it's recommended and I also used 36/42 on my 650 and again, no issues. Someone posted a letter from a well known brand on this site some time ago. I can't remember the brand or the detail but it stated that 36/42 is the best pressure for most bikes and riding conditions.

Someone may be able to find and post it again, I can't.  :groan:  :thumb:

The  tyre pressure debate is a minefield I am not going  into except  to say trying different  pressures is free, and if you do try it try for a tankfull, assuming  it is not diabolical, it takes a while  to get your  head round  a different  feel.

My first set of Michelin road 5's I ran 36/42 as I was two up 60% of the time. The rear lasted 4k miles. My second set of road 5's I ran a 33/38 as I was solo 95% of the time. The rear lasted 4k miles also though I did prefer the lower pressures for solo use.
Ps the first rear was a trail and the second was a standard,  wear was similar for me.

So.. Back at workshop tonight..

Checked the pressure in case it had lost some, still at 42psi.
Measured the depth at several places around the circumference..
Looking from the back.. at the narrow parts of the tread groove.  Depth accross
Left 5.2, 5.5, (5.3 middle 5.3), 5.5, 4.7 right..

Now I don't remember measuring the new depth but perhaps it isn't as drastic as I first thought.  Although it certainly looked like it has a significant flat area in the middle when we got back on Sunday eve..
