2016 DL650 engine oil
« on: May 26, 2025, 12:47:20 »
I've got a 2016 DL650 with 14k miles on the clock and looking for recommendations on which oil to use . It's used as a daily commute approx 7miles each way and trips out on weekends. It does get the odd blast on twisty roads. At the moment it's got silkolene super4 10w40 . Would I be better off using motul 5100 or 7100 ?

For that sort of usage I'd be using the cheapest 10w40 I can find. Maybe for a short distance commute in the winter 10w30. ( I ran my 1.9 diesel on 10w30 all year for 7 years and 60k miles.)
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

I am going to disagree with Brockett on this one. :bow-blue:
Using it as a commuter on a 7 mile journey means MORE wear due to the number of cold starts per 1000? miles , along with condensation in the oil due to it not getting real hot. It is one of the reasons why Taxis do huge miles reliably , hardly any cold starts per 1000 miles.
I would stick with the recommended oil spec as in the manual , the make is not that important , just the spec. And change it more often, I change mine at 3750 miles

I've never used it but I'm sure that Silkolene is fine.
My choice of oil & is Castrol Power 1 10W 40 & has been for a good while,  a quick look & seems as if it's around the same price.
I'm with Nigel on changing the oil (& filter for me) on a very regular basis & for me that's less than Nigel's mileage, at around 3000 miles.

In the 9 years the Glee has been in our family, (was mine, now Sons) Silkolene 10/40 always used and bike has always run well on it. Oil and filter changed at 3k at the latest or 2 years...
(A friend used Motol oil on one of his bikes and ended up with a bit of a notchy gear-shift afterwards...)

I have used Motul 5000 10w/40 semi-synthetic on all 3 of my Stroms over the last 10 years, and change it every 5000 miles, which makes it easy to remember when to change the oil,as in 5,10,15,etc.Plus I change the oil filter every time. The Suzuki oil change interval is 7500 miles for the oil and 15000 miles for the filter.I have never had any condensation problems in the sump whatsoever.

Oil manufactures need to sell their products, so they will use different marketing techniques. How will your bike engine know which motorcyle oil is being used?

To me, unless you live in a region where there are excessively high and/or low air temperatures or you are not constantly riding a full rpm, oil is oil. Provided of cause, that this oil is a motorcycle wet clutch suitable rated oil. Consult your owner's and/or service manuals to clarify which oil to use.

Have a look through the sub-heading on https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ for discussions on oil.  And a discussion on using the same oil filter twice is discussed in https://blog.amsoil.com/your-oil-filter-questions-answered/ or https://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterStudy.html for info shared wrt oil filters.

Re the comment on Motul and gearchange issues.
I've run their 5000 too for many years in the 650 and others with no issues at all. It's priced well too.
But it's an oil thread! I'll be back when it reaches 200 when the OP decides something completely different.
I would question the benefits of using fully synthetic.
Pffffffftttttt.

@Ianmc - the 7500mls you state relates to the latest model, not the Glee  :thumb:

I've got a 2015 650 which I bought in 2020 with 24,000 miles on the clock.

I have no record of what oil the previous owner used, but I like Morris oil as I can get it locally at a very good price. I was using Super Race 10-40 until they changed all the names and now it's called Race Sport4 10-40.

I change the oil and filter every 3,500 miles and the bikes at around 50,000 miles now and goes just as well as it ever has.
The older I get, the better I was.

@Dark-Strom In 2015 for the Glee, Suzuki changed their recommendation from semi to fully synth oil and doubled the service mileage to 7500. On advice of the dealer that supplied mine, semi synth was used with oil and filter changed at the early Glee service interval of 3750.

I carried this over to my 1050, as the supplying dealer used semi synth at first service.
However just had 15,000 service done at new workshop and he used fully synth as said Suzuki recommended it.
Since service I’ve noticed that the gear change is ‘notchier’ up to fifth. Not difficult you can just feel it going into gear, whereas before third upwards was seamless.
So maybe Suzuki engines do prefer semi synthetic oil?

I use Motul 5000 always as well, change oil and a new Hiflo filter every 3500 miles on my 650 because it's cheap and an easy service to do.
On a side note what is considered hight mileage on the 650 engines?
with regular oil changes and the engine not being revved high all the time I'd imagine they should go well over 100k miles without major issues?

@Ianmc - Apologies I stand corrected as you say for the later model Glee the interval changed...I guess we will all stick to what we know anyway  :thumb:

Silkolene Super 4 10w40 will be absolutely fine.

Good quality oil that meets the requirements of the V-Strom Engines (all of them!)

That's from someone who used to sell the stuff and use it for my commuting bike while I worked in a main dealers - though I used to get a staff discount!
IIRC I put Motul 5000 in the Varadero and I have some Repsol stuff to go in the GSX soon. I look for what's on offer that's suitable.
Some bike engines are designed for specific oils and grades - the V-Strom isn't and doesn't care!!!

As long as you're using a good brand and the grade meets the requirements of the engine and you change on schedule go for it.
If you are doing lots of cold starts and short runs, I'd advise to change more regularly than the schedule.
