2019 V-Strom DL250 spare key
« on: April 24, 2024, 10:33:56 »
Hi folks. Need to make a spare key for this bike. The mechanic told me you have to go straight to Suzuki. Any other advice or suggestions Suzuki main dealers would probably charged me quite a bit of money to make the spare key so any of you blokes have made a spare key from other means thanks

If the 250 is the same as the 1050 you have to get a key from a Suzuki dealer, about £80, then have them code it to your bike, about £40, and once done the little red led on the ignition switch will flash three times when you turn the ignition on instead of two, to show three keys are coded to the bike.
If you are replacing a lost key, as opposed to getting a spare, I presume it’s the same, but a dealer will advise you.
You are responsible for having the key cut to fit the ignition switch at a local key cutters.

My dealer had awful problems coding the new key to the bike. They were brilliant trying but in the end it was likely that my Garmin satnav power box, fixed to the cowling frame was causing interference as once unplugged the key coded on the next attempt.

Do you have a little red LED by your key hole? Is there a wire from that top plastic piece?

I don't think your bike has an immobiliser at all from looking at the parts diagram, the plastic bit is called a "Lock Cover" rather than an "Antenna Assy, Immobilizer", and it is missing the wire on the diagram. The keys are also different, your blank from Suzuki is a 37146-20K20, the ones for the later 650 and 1000s/1050s is 37146-13K00.

Either way, you can go to a local lock cutting firm and ask them. They will know if they can clone the key before they do it and order the correct blank (as they can see if they can read it). I had a copy made (blade and chip) of my existing key on my 2017 650, cost £40, works just as good as the original. If you don't need a chip, it may be cheaper as they'll be able to just cut you a mechanical key.
