Car Tyres
« on: April 01, 2012, 17:02:48 »
Good afternoon blokes,

I have just been reading up on a topic on Stromtrooper forum regarding the use of car tyres instead of motorcycle tyres on the rear rim.

The general argument is, that in the main, the tyres are constructed the same but car tyres will corner just as well and have greater longevity up to 20000mls quoted.

I would be interested to know if any one out their has tried using car tyres as an alternative?

If you have an opinion please keep it sensible and refrain from trying to blind us with science or fiction.

Regards DWC

Ladies and gentleman,

It was no April, but a serious question. From the replies I would guess that nobody has tried it.

Check out the Stromtrooper site and put in DARKSIDE to the search box. Read and inwardly digest. Or just search for DARKSIDE forume on the webb.

Personally I think it could bre worth considering.

There ain't no way that's going to work unless you ride a Harley or a similar bike in a straight line..

If you try it, do let us come watch...

I personally do know a chap who used to use a car tyre on the rear of his Harley and he used to tow a trailer. He claims 60,000 km but does not do twisties, his name is Derro Dave

Yep, could see it on a very slow cornering bike, no lean agles etc etc, but kind of defeats the object of having a bike in the first place. Well, at least for me at any rate.

I also thik the insurers would take a dim view in an accident...they love to find any excuse to blame you and not pay out.

I some how don't think the dim view would be the insurers if someone actually thinks its a good idea to put a car tyre on a bike!

Poke Treadtrader, he'll know, send him a PM or something asking if he can read and respond to this topic.

For what it's worth, I wouldn't consider it at all myself.

As I though.
The British biking fraternity appear to hold some conservative views.

That said, at present I'm waiting for a replacement, conventional, tyre. Perhaps after this one and having read up on the subject some more I may consider trying the darkside.

Just because it doesn't fit within conventional thinking doesn't make it wrong.

I'd say "conservative" is still thinking that car and bike tyres are the same. Bike tyres developed separately because there was a need for it.

Why are you so sure that a person riding with a car tyre fitted will fall off anymore than a person using a concentional bike tyre.

I agree with your statement that they have been developed for specific puposes.

I'm not advocating either one or the other. I am merely offering up for debate a topic I came across that I found worthy of further investigation.

Two thoughts from me :-
How many do you plan to fit?
Will you be keeping a spare in your top box ?

They should be.  :GRR:

Personally I think its a bloody ludicrous idea and one which is not worth of a discussion.

There are key elements in Tyres that tell you what they are for....CAR tyre and BIKE tyre. The profiles are different.
OK some people might put car Tyres on choppers etc that don't go round corners, but putting one on a strom or any other type of bike would be in search of a Darwin award to be honest.
