Title: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Fat Rat on March 24, 2020, 16:07:24
I have spent some time over the last few weeks titivating a neglected 57 plate DL1000, this includes;

New Battery
Clutch
Clutch Slave Cylinder rebuild
New OE Rotors on the front
Front Calipers completely rebuilt
New Pads front a rear
Chain & Sprockets
12 months MOT

Today I took it out for a test ride after I finished putting back together after waiting for a new Water Pump seal.

Anyway, I was busy congratulating myself on how it was running as I pulled it into the mancave, only to quickly realise it was on fire  :dl_hyperhysteria:

It started under the seat so I am at the moment assuming a wiring issue. It took two full extinguishers to put it out. I honestly thought the mancave was going to go up.

Fuuuuucccccccck.

Not a Firestorm then?

At least it should have killed off any lingering Corvid. :)

In my defence, I was dropping some disposable gloves down to my daughter (she lives two miles away) and I posted them through the door, so no contact, other than the potential of the Fire Service

It's only a slow news day for those who've been sat at home all day with time to read / watch it all.

And where was Karen with a phone to record The Dance of The Burning Bollocks??

Post by: Fat Rat on March 24, 2020, 19:37:01
Now my heart rate has slowed and the smouldering arse hairs have been taken care of, I started pulling the bike apart. All of the damage is on the offside, so far all I see is melted plastic, no damaged wiring. Suspiciously, there was a piece of  heat proof matting on that side of the exhaust.

Is it possible she is running ridiculously hot on one side (I am sure I read something somewhere)?

Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: tallpaul on March 24, 2020, 20:02:22
Coil failure to one cylinder causes that if memory serves. The unburnt fuel from the duff cylinder burns in the exhaust pipe after being ignited by the collector. Silencer gets screaming hot and melts the plastics.

Edit: a blocked catalyst can also allow the exhaust to get hot too. Found an old post from Greywolf.

Ho lee crap. That is awful.
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: kwackboy on March 24, 2020, 20:38:17
 the silencer must have been glowing red to melt all that plastic.
Surely if the silencer was blocked you'd notice a running issue of some kind.
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Fat Rat on March 24, 2020, 20:46:15
It was a little gutless the first time I took her out but on today's ride that was much improved, although she did splutter once.
I have only travelled short distances and at lower speeds, it is possible that she was firing on one

Edit: it wasn't just melted, there were full fat flames.
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!

   I must go out and buy some fire extinguishers, oh wait...

Glad you're OK  :thumb:
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: kwackboy on March 24, 2020, 20:51:17
I'm pretty sure you would notice if it was running on one cylinder, there'd be less than 50% power, it'll sound awful and struggle to idle
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Fat Rat on March 24, 2020, 20:53:00
Nothing that severe, I may swap out a coil and maybe a silencer from CJ and see what happens
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Fat Rat on March 24, 2020, 20:54:08
At this rate, CJ may well be the donor for the undertray as well.

If the λ sensor is playing up does it allow more fuel through the cylinder without rough running?

I know, the bike on fire plus three others, the man cave and then the static Caravan next to it with four big Calor Gas cylinders outside  :bawl:

I'd have been in severe need of a number 2 after that incident.
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Pete O Tube on March 25, 2020, 00:13:44
The other thing I'd check is the short fuel hose between the throttle bodies, they're known to leak, try rotating it to see if it's loose on the stubs.
I had a pool of petrol on the top of the crankcase between the cylinders.
I replaced the crimps on the hose with proper fuel pipe clamps (not jubilee clips) and all's been fine since.

Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Fat Rat on March 26, 2020, 12:11:53
I have stripped the bike today. If there is such a thing as being lucky when your bike bursts into flames, this is it. Other than the obvious plastic damage, undertray, hugger, one side panel and the tail piece, there is no other damage. The subframe is unmarked and the loom is also untouched. I have all of the parts except one side panel (which I have just seen on eBay for £20).

There is a hotspot on the exhaust, so maybe a blockage. I am going to replace the ignition coil for that side and also replace the silencer (thanks CJ) and see how we go.

Stickers. You need stickers.
Title: Re: Jeeeeeeeeesuuuuuuus!
Post by: Fat Rat on March 26, 2020, 16:42:55
Pffft people who sell stickers.........  :shy:

Anyway, it looks like a V-Strom Sticker bowl of Welsh Blancmange to Tall Paul for calling a bad coil  :thumb:

For anyone interested, the resistance across the primary windings should be between 2 and 5 ohms and across the secondary should be between 24k and 37k ohms.

As you can see, the primary is in spec. the secondary isn't. I measured the other coil on the bike and it is in spec.
Rather than pull a twenty year old coil from CJ, I have ordered a new one. While the tank was off, I dropped a new air filter in too.

My exhaust gasket turned up today so another hour or so over the Mancave  :fix: I have to admit that she is now clearly firing on both cylinders and sounds so much better for it. I am quite new to the V-Strom and put the lumpiness down to old fuel and shite in the filter, which was going to be my next job before the bike let me know what was really going on.

Other than a slight crispy corner underneath on the seat covering (not visible when on the bike) nobody would ever know about the....erm...incident.

Well, except for the 6000 people on here and the hundreds of visitors every day  :shy:

So, to recap. This 57 plate DL1000 with 53k on the clock (sorry)  :smirk: had been standing outside for an extended period. This will turn into a sales ad once I have put a hundred miles on her and we are allowed out.
She has had;

New Battery
New Clutch
Pads Front and Rear
Front Calipers rebuilt
New Brake Rotors on the front (OEM)
Brakes and Clutch bled
Clutch Slave Cylinder rubbers
DID Chain & Sprockets Air Filter
Plugs
New Coil
Air Filter
Oil & Filter
New Coolant (electrical connectors behind the Radiator cleaned and ACF-50)
donated Silencer
Replacement rear mudguard and tail
12 months MOT
2 x Fire Extinguishers  :shy:
