I get his theory, I've seen brand new sprockets that are slightly oval however, he has his gauge on the chain and an old one at that.
Who's to say each link is moving as free as it should and seated flush on the rear sprocket..?   Even though all links look the same they can perform differently resulting in stretch at different points of the chain.
