Right. Each to their own but I hate noisy exhausts. I like to ride quite ‘briskly’ and having a quiet exhaust means I can do that without making babies cry, old ladies feint or bringing attention to myself from ploddus-norvegicus… But in saying that, I want to change my exhaust for something smaller.
I’ve got a 14 DL1000. Late this year or early next year I want to ride to Senegal and The Gambia and I want to fit soft panniers instead of my hard panniers, but as it stands, I am sure that any bag on the right side will rest on the huge stock silencer and over time get damaged by the heat as the silencer does get hot.
This is why I want a smaller and thinner silencer, but not as loud as a stock silencer. Is there such a thing as a smaller silencer which isn’t loud…? Has anyone fitted a non-stock silencer that didn’t bleed your ears and frighten the natives…?

If you're happy with the stock silencer why not use your existing hard pannier rails to rest your soft luggage on? Or, if you want something made for the job then these look OK & cheaper than changing an exhaust?

Cheers mate, but I’ve already got pannier racks on - SW Motech - and sit immediately above the silencer, just touching the silencer. If I hang a bag on there I just know that the clearance between a bag and the silencer is going to be tight and possibly rest on the silencer.

Any decent exhaust place could alter the upsweep on your standard system and lengthen the mounting bracket to enable it to hang lower. I have seen a couple of KTM 1*90's where they have done this mod. If you need it quieter you could and an extra silencer?

I too don't like noisy exhausts but I do like the look of the Arrows, Akro's Termi's etc
I have a Mivv carbon can fitted with the decibel killer, it's no noisier on idle and only very slightly noisier when accelerating, I can't hear the exhaust when cruising along, it's also smaller and much lighter so it works for me.
Mine is the bell end version with foreskin style endcap, this can be removed by drilling the rivets leaving the normal much nicer looking (imho) traditional end, something I will most likely do eventually.

My Remus can is not to loud but it is more than the oe exhaust. It's also much smaller and lighter. Not sure you'd ever find an aftermarket exhaust that's quieter than the original exhaust.
I use soft panniers with a home made support, not touched the exhaust as yet though I do use sports type panniers which are tapered so fit really well.
The more square waterproof type might touch if not securely fitted.

Cheers lads. Some great options there. I like the idea of the carbon exhaust with the foreskin. It’ll be lighter, but it also looks incredibly cool. I like it. But - less money spent on a new silencer will mean more biker beans to go towards travelling so I’m going to consider the heat-shield stuff when I get my soft panniers, or even making a shelf. Just depends how low the panniers will sit.
I’ve got SW Motech racks and the SW Motech panniers and the right hand pannier actually rubs against the top of the silencer so that’s why I was worrying about soft bags - in case the right hangs too low and sits on the silencer. I’d hate to get a few days-in and find a hole in my bag.
I was actually considering just using my hard panniers, thinking it all too much trouble, but after reading this I’m definitely going to go soft and use either a heat-shield or a Heath-Robinson contraption..

I fitted a Lextek can on my bike as I found the standard can to close for comfort on my soft panniers.
As the exhaust is in two parts it can be rotated to lower it down, the kit comes with a spacer but I made a new bracket for it.
I did find it a bit to loud for me so I took the baffle out and welded a 6 inch stainless tube with some holes in it to the end which has reduced the noise.

@Skiddy - I'm going to have to find out about the mivv. I'm another one who doesn't want loud, would be happy with a slightly deeper sound and losing a few kilos saves me the effort.
I don't suppose you have a sound clip of both the standard and your end can? (I know it's very unlikely!)
I'll check their website when I'm home in case they do.
@rikpward - what's your Leo Vince like - I'm not being mega lazy, just have very limited internet atm as I'm on a little Greek Island. Is it really quieter?
