The Goretex Guarantee...it works
« on: November 08, 2019, 23:10:54 »
On my last trip the left Sidi Adventure Goretex boot leaked on two separate occasions in heavy rain, they were 3yrs and 10 mths old, undamaged and should not have leaked imho.
Goretex  claim a "lifetime guarantee" to keep you dry so I shot a email off to Goretex, they requested photo's, then arranged for the boots to be sent to Germany for evaluation. They found the boots to be faulty and have replaced them with the current model and these arrive today...I'm very impressed with Goretex's service and wanted to share my experience.

Don't bother, I'm still in hold and all I can hear is laughter.

Back to the original post, if you have boots where the stitching fails - as mine did on the lower clasp strap on my 3yr old boots - don't do what I did and take them to a local cobbler who repairs motorbike boots and leathers, as they ruined the gore text liner by stitching straight through it  :angry-banghead:

You'd be better off sending them to http://lancashiresportsrepairs.co.uk/ who can repair the boots (or any Gore-Tex fabric) without damaging the liner (they're listed on Gore-Tex's website as the official repaired which I only found out after the above).

Sage, how do you find those boots? I almost bought a pair a couple of weeks ago as TCX no longer sell my Infinity Evo boots, but I wasn't quite sure of the fit.

I like the Sidi's.
They were bought after I broke my ankle in Spain (yes, I know horse bolted etc etc) wearing a pair of Daytona Road GTX touring boots, basically a deer ran out and pushed me off at about 30mph.....so the Daytonas finished there days as dog walking boots. The Sidi's are great in that they have a ankle hinge so are stiff sideways but flex up and down with plenty of armour elsewhere too. They have got a bit warm on other bikes when it is in the high 20's, but as the Strom seems to provide plenty on air flow around the foot (see my Wind Deflector post) they should be comfy to higher temps.
They are a snug/slim fit so try first and go up half a size too.

Thanks Sage, I'll pop back in to Sportsbikeshop and try them on again. The TCXs have been great apart from the lower strap stitching coming undone, but their current line doesn't seem to fit me as well. One thing that put me off the Forma boots (that were the most comfortable) was they use a non-Gore-Tex waterproof liner which only has a 12 month warranty. When they cost £300+ I want more than 12 months guarantee.

Incidentally, my TCX Infinity Evo boots were a replacement set as the original pair I had also leaked after 2 years & were replaced with a new pair free of charge

I also looked at the Forma boots, they were very comfortable and lots of people seem to like them, but it seemed to me that more comfort and flexibility meant less protection imho....its a trade off...comfort vs protection to a large extent.

There used to be a bloke in Flitwick, Bedfordshire that supplied Daytona made to measure boots for those with heavier calves etc. He told me that the biggest cause of Goretex failure in use was people not cutting their toenails often enough.

Heard the same about hiking boots. Main failure is at the toe area due to big toe nails damaging the liner!!  :)
