There was a whole host of them at the Tramway Museum on Sunday. Along with more Vincent's than I've ever seen in one place, and tons of lovely old and not so old classics. The Just Stop Oil mob should've brought some orange powder to put down to soak up all the leaks on the cobbles.

Blimey ... I would have come out in a rash if I had seen lots of MZ's ..  lol

The shop I still work at started out as an MZ dealer and when I started they were moving over to working on and selling Japanese/European bikes.

I spent several years working occasionally on MZ's when we were quiet.

Despite being really easy to work on, I nearly ended my career repairing bikes, I hated them ..  lol

Used to be MZ's all over the place, but only to be ridden if you were skint as a stop gap.Apart from the odd zealot that was, even off the bike you could tell them from the fixed over your shoulder stare with tiny pupils, hands in his pockets fiddling with old jets like rosary beads.

I loved the things, had a 125, 150, three supa 5's and an etz 250 over the years. Used as commuting bikes to keep the big bike good. I even bought some spare part from Burwin motorcycle's that I couldn't get over here. Wish I still had the supa5 now.

I enjoyed my MZ 250, great little workhorse and quite fun to ride. Did look at buying another a few years back but the prices put me off.

Porter, you are obviously a well rounded individual who used MZ's as they were intended and managed to break away from addiction.Have pity for those who to this day do not recognise any other form of two wheel transport as existing......The MZ zealot.
Maybe someone should start a support group......and a charity.........MZ AID maybe.

Time to fiddle withthe rear wheel.
Bearings were crunchy with rust and paint in a poor condition
Tyre is dated week 17 of 2000 so that's a bit old at 23 years eh!
Time to remove the brake disc. Threadlocker was used so out with the blow torch and give some heat, However, there seems to always be one bolt that would rather have it's head twisted off than unscrew.
So let's play "spot the awkward bleeder".

DOH!
Out with the drill and taps then...sigh.
Wow ...23 year old tyre!!! ,  don't even want to think about that,...shit!!
At least you got the bearings out,I have had the inner cage collapse leaving just the outer ring stuck in the wheel.A complete ball ache!

This morning I had the car serviced at Cathedral Garage in Waybread and while I was there a mechanic drilled out the bolt and put an insert in it's place. Only downside is that the thread length of the bolt will have to be reduced to 11mm.  I think that'll be OK.

How can I deal with aluminium parts that are degraged by corrosion.
I have scrubbed them with brake cleaner, then detergent and used a toothbrush and lastly a brass wire brush.
Is it worth more polishing or shall I just paint them?
Etch primer and than a rattle can paint and lacquer.

The chain adjusters, after a good clean,  I'd leave them as they are and cover them in grease, they're hidden.

The end caps I'd paint as they'll be susceptible to the elements

I like bare polished metal ,more upkeep but ?.You could of course do both, polish then clear coat?
And the sisal can be used to bring up any dodgy nuts and bolts ,think caliper and suspension linkage that are not that cheap relative to bikes price,  :thumb:.I have even been known to polish fasteners then after fitting back on cover with clear nail polish stolen from the missus....shhh.

Thanks gents - I like the idea of a bench polisher but I'd only use it a few times. I think I'll paint the end caps and grease the adjusters.

Just an idea as I'm not sure what plans you have for the bike but I once was behind a bike that had his swing arm end plates painted with some sort of reflective paint.

Don't know what sort or where the owner got the paint but it was very noticeable in the dark.

Nice idea QB but the adjuster plates are not flat.
