Givi AF on the way, Puig and MRA don't work (Glee)
« on: December 11, 2013, 11:19:34 »
MRA Touring Vario didn't do anything good on the wind noise I have on my Glee, so it's off and Puig has arrived today. Will install it during the weekend and post back here if it performes any better then MRA Vario.

Puig is on but I can't go out of my garage because of huge wind storm we got that will last until weekend.
Anyway, I first mounted it on top holes, sit up on the bike and it was too tall. I can see over the top edge but barely (I'm 190cm). So, decided to go to middle holes. I was using all the bits that came with the screen and for the beginning longer spacers on the top, shorter on the bottom, just as described in manuals of the screen. There I found the problem. In middle holes the screen's edge is sitting on the headlight surrounding. So, had to put 3 of plastic tap washers bellow each spacer and it's not touching the surrounding anymore and the top of the screen is lined up with my mount.
I like this screen a lot. It's larger then MRA and on the lower half is widening a lot but not interfering with hand guards nor mirrors (my mirrors are on spacers). It's light-smoked version and look very good on the bike. MRA has curvature towards the rider but this one is straight and then on the top it has slight curvature oposite the rider.
But liking the new screen is not much important as I have to see how it performs and probably do a lot of testing/adjusting with inclination or hight. The coming days will tell.

OK, OK...
The storm is losing it's force so I guess I'll take the bike out today for a quick spin and take few photos.

Well, just a quick spin as it started to rain (that's something rare here in south). Couldn't go more then 100 km/h but up to that, all wind noise is gone (and I've tried without earplugs) but now I have some buffeting. It's not too much but it's noticeable. Found out that turbulent air is hitting just the top of my helmet, no air from sides nor from tank. Now after testing on the road I see I can go back to top holes, I'll be able to see fine above the screen.

Here is general shot, it looks very nice:

Here a bit closer:

And the spot where it was touching the headlight surrounding:

So, back to top holes and waiting for test at the weekend !!!

I had one on another previous bike. It was great. There was one small issue I had though when touring abroad in hot countries. It kept bugs off well but wow did I get hot!  Took it off for future trips.

Yes, it's Puig Touring Screen 5895h
It doesn't look that big, I don't know why it shows up huge on the photo but in reality is much smaller.

"h" in the reference stands for light smoked screen. Without "h" is the same screen but clear version. Then there is one more version which is heavily smoked but don't know the letter used for that one.

Well, it looks like I can't get it right. Tried top holes, spacers as per user manual - buffeting. Inverted spacers, longer ones to the bottom and shorter ones to the top, a bit better but still buffeting. Put few plastic tap washers on the bottom spacers to give yet some more angle - just a bit better but still no good. And for the last try, changed the screen to bottom holes, put huge spacers on the bottom and long screws but then it got dark and wind picked up.
So, I'll wait for the morning and do this last test.
If I was just 10cm shorter it would work perfectly as if I duck just a little I have no buffeting or wind noise, but that's very uncomfortable position to ride for a long.
So, if this last test doesn't work, I'll have to try Givi Airflow (is spending money ever going to stop?). Then I'll have one bike and 3 screens...
If I opt for Givi I can sell either MRA or Puig (but only one of them) for about half of the price, if there's someone interested here on forum.
News tomorrow.

At the end, no luck. I've tried every possible setting, shimming, angle... And it's not working. I'm too tall for it. So, Givi Airflow ordered and one of screens (MRA or Puig) will be sold. If anyone from this forum wants one of them, let me know by PM. €50 plus shipping by PayPal for any of them. Puig is new, MRA is one year old. If nobody wants one of them, it'll go to eBay.

What about trying the "Givi Airflow" with a "Madstad Adjustable Bracket", which is what I am thinking of doing. That way you will be able to adjust the height and angle of the screen. Be careful though, as I understand it, you need to order the bracket for the "Glee", but any screen you buy then to fit the bracket has to be for the "Wee". No doubt someone will be along shortly to confirm or deny this.

Yes, that's true, Madstad for Glee accepts only screens for Wee. But first, I'll go with Givi Airflow and see from there what to do next. If Givi Airflow doesn't work for me, then it will be Madstad with one of 3 screens I'll have. I guess one of them would fit with new holes drilled.
And then, there is this product, not known very much, that functions just like Madstad but accepts the screen for Glee. It's also less expensive:

Nice find bosnjo! :thumb:
Might be looking to treat myself to one of them, appears to do the same job but for less money. Plus you can fit the existing screen, even better!! :thumb:

Can you believe, it has just appeared one day in the corner of my Facebook wall as advertisement. I don't care about those advertisements on facebook, but I simply don't know why I clicked on that one. And, voila, there was a bracket.

Givi Airflow installed and partially tested.

Conclusion:
IT'S JUST PERFECT

The day is windy as hell. Huge wind guts but I decided to give it a go, just for the sake of little testing. Knowing I won't be able to make a proper test, I installed it in top holes and pulled the 2nd screen almost to a top. So, the top of the screen was in the hight of my mouth.
I suffered quite a bit with wind guts from all of the sides but had no buffeting and no wind noise, not even for the moment. Went up to 120 km/h as the wind guts were too strong and I didn't want to risk. So, up to that speed, it was perfect. Just clean continuos wind on my helmet. No need for earplugs. Then I tried to cover the "compression box" between two screens with my hand (glove) and the buffeting immediately started. Removed my hand and it got back to perfect.
So, I guess I have arrived to the end of the road of testing and spending money on screens.
MRA Touring Vario and Puig Touring are now laying on my shelf.
I'm happy camper.  :banana-dreads:

The point is, Givi Airflow uses it's own patent with the compression of air going between two screens, and then shooting it straight up, where it meets horizontal stream very high above the rider. It's really working.

Hi Bosnjo, any chance of an update for the Givi Airflow? I bought my glee in december and only got 450 miles on clock to date. The buffeting is worse than any other bike I've had and although done some innovative tinkering with a old screens I'm beginning to dread riding over 100kph. Is the Givi as good as first impression. I'm 6.1' and screens just don't seem tall enough. :bawl:

Well, Givi Airflow works by using special "compression box" between two screens. So, it doesn't even need to be as high as you may want it to be. Anyway, I'm taller then you and if I wanted, I could slide the screen upwards that much, that I could look only through the screen. Right now, the position is: lower screen on top holes, higher screen with its top edge leveled with my mouth (more or less). It still has planty of sliding to go up. As for a conclusion, wind noise is zero now, I don't need earplugs anymore. Buffeting is gone 90% and I found out those remaining 10% are not from the screen anymore but they are coming from the tank area, known for producing some buffeting (when I cover that area with my hand, all of the remaining buffeting is gone). I found on the other forum that blokes make windflaps for that area and they claim all buffeting is gone. So I ordered some material to play with and make those windflaps (it hasn't arrived yet).
Beside that, I'm going to try to tilt the screen a bit to the rider by adding some more spacers on lower bolts (Givi Airflow already has its own spacers). But that's just for play and curiosity. I doubt I can make it even better, as this product is excellent. When I was to order Puig, people were telling me to get Givi Airflow as that's the only one good for my hight. I wanted to save few quids and got Puig. Puig is high enough but buffeting is horrible. So, I got Givi Airflow and I'm hapy now (and Puig is laying on the shelf now).
I couldn't recomment it more, it does what it says and I can say that it eliminates all of the buffeting coming from the screen area. The rest of buffeting is from mirrors and tank area. I have swapped the mirrors to Aprilia Tuono ones when I got the bike, so I only have tank area now to work on.
