For a screen for somebody one up on standard ride hight and 5ft 10"?

Haway lads save me the bother of trawling through all of the threads. My 360 mile ride back when I bought the bike was hellish and gave me a right buffeting and a stiff neck. It was eased a bit if I lent forward and ducked my head slightly. Somebody on another thread thinks I currently have the powerbronze version fitted.

I am not too concerned on looks, but I also don't want something that makes it look like a Honda step through either. Those with an extra piece on the top don't look ower clever either.

Most of my riding will be 60mph commuting, but I hope to do some long distance touring in the summer too.I'd rather not spend over £110 either.

I think (been told) mine wasn't standard either, and it also causes buffering and blurs my vision. I've already taken 1.5 inches off the top and have this evening taken a further inch or so off. I'm yet to ride it to find out how its now, but it can't be worse. I'm sure the low pressure behind the screen caused by the tall screen, is causing this. I've never had bother with my schuberth c3 on my previous bikes.

I'm a cheap skate so I havent bought a replacement

Consensus? on screens?

Type "screen" in the search box top right of this page.

MRA tall touring for my pennies worth. I had one set at the second highest setting and it cured 99% of the buffeting. At 5'10" it should be fine on one of the lower settings  :thumb:

Conditions change, temperatures especially. I would recommend a way to quickly adjust to changes so it's Madstad mounts and screens for me. I've happily used MP screens for years but they went out of business. Madstad is now making screens of a similar design.

Cheers fella. From what I've read on here, the screen hight can be counter intuitive in that sometimes a lower screen height is required to reduce buffering, although with the one mine has, ducking lower definitely improves the situation.

So you're recommending one these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MRA-Suzuki-DL1000-V-STROM-K2-K3-02-03-VARIO-TOURING-MOTORCYCLE-SCREEN-35123-/330617356938?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4cfa54828a#ht_1809wt_901?

I've got that MRA and at 6ft 3" it's not amazing, but should be fine for you given the amount of variations it can have etc.

I've now cut about 4 inches off my screen. The buffeting isn't as bad but still there.
Does anyone know if there's a lot involved changing the screen mounting system on a k3 to the later system from k4 onwards? There seems to be more options.

Sorry. I didn't notice the '02 model. No Madstads for it.

is there much difference on the front end? what I mean is, where does the screen brackets bolts onto on the K4 onwards? could that not be retro fitted, and also the coweling behind the screen where the brackets pass through?

The fairing bracket and windscreen mount is entirely different. The earlier type fixes the windscreen by two bolts at the top. The bottom of the screen is captured by the cowling plastic.

The later type has four bolts mounted more centrally with 8 holes allowing adjustment for the screen and cowling as well as the two top bolts for the cowling alone.

Damon, far too much to change, would need a new front end basically.

I might experiment with something thou, I might cut a curved section out of the bottom of the screen to allow air flow up over the front of the dash, this may help. I've taken the idea front my er6f (or 650 ninja in American speak) I don't have a pic right now but you can google it to see what I mean.

I've looked into what it would require to change the front of the old models to take the new model's screens and it's way too much hassle. I'd wager cutting a bit out of the bottom would make a difference. Would like to see it when you've done it.

No bother, hopefully tomorow afternoon and I'll post it up. May need to consider a way to secure th bottom end thou, cos it effectively shoves into the coweling at the moment, but if I chop off the end, it's only the sides and the 2 bolts holding it on. I'll gauge how the fittings like when it's done and report back.

Use a hole saw and just make an upside down triangle shape. That way you can leave the mount bit in place. Something like this, only more triangular with the corners rounded:

I hope you get the idea, that is a screen on a newer bike. I'm talking about the cut out in it, not the arch at the bottom.

Yeah, I know what you mean, like the bonnet vent shape. Maybe..... Not sure if I have the tools and patients to finish it off properly. On a cut exposed edge, I can file sand and flame polish, but if it's within the screen, it's going to be more trickier.

Well I decided to give it a go this morning, couldn't sleep so was up early.

First off, I unwrapped the ER6f and had a butchers at the nose. The height of the vent is about 4 inches.

Marked up the Vee using some line tape.

Masked off the upper area just incase I goes astray.

Cut what I could using a 1mm cutting disc on my grinder.

Leaving some raggy edges which I then had to file and sand.

After a bit of flame polishing.

I then went to mask off the back side of the screen so I could blacken the lower section while the screen was off........ and the inevitable happened!

Anyways, it was pointless gluing it back on, vibration would just snap it again so back on the bike it went.

Just had a short ride and its inconclusive. There is still some buffeting but hard to gauge how much at this point. I need to go out for a good ride so for the time being, the search continues..........

That looks pretty good, I expected it to look a bit crude, but I like it  You can put some screen trim around the top, the slight difference in the top ridge of the screen with it on can make a bit of difference to the air flow.
