Title: The Dodgy Place Name Game
Post by: Juvecu on August 01, 2014, 17:27:17
How it works:

Only pictures taken from today's date onwards count! (Today = 01/08/2014, please be honest.)

(Edit: if there really is no road sign for any of these then a picture of your satnav showing you are there will count. If someone else finds a sign after you got the credit with a satnav picture then they can claim the credit.)

Ram Alley, Burbage, Wiltshire

I drive past this one on the way to work every day, so wasn’t hard to find.

In the road itself, there are no signs and only a 50 yard section where the Sat Nav tells you that you are there.

I didn’t want to hang around here as the security looked scary.

Okay, its a beautiful day out the sun is shining and I needed to have a run out today and try and round off my tyres from the squaring off they got traveling across France and I visited these places on route.

Turkey Cock Lane, Colchester, Essex

Then I went over to

Cock and Bell Lane, Long Melford

Had a nice ride cross country up to

Six Mile Bottom, Suffolk

A little bit further and I came to

Stow-Cum-Quy, Cambridgeshire

Heading eastwards I then found

Prickwillow, Cambridgeshire

On my way to my last village I came across one on the Sat Nav with no road sign

Barton Bottom, Suffolk

Finally on my way home I went through

Drinkstone, Suffolk

I did find one place which probably doesn't really count as it is a pub and there are lost of pubs with this name, but this one is

'The Cock Inn, Clare'

Well I found it amusing anyway.
So a nice round trip and started to round off the tyres again.

Cockpit Hill was knocked down in the early 70's and replaced with a shopping centre. I could find two signs that referred to the 'area'. Both were on road direction signs this is one of them.

Just for a bit of interest?? There is also a pub of the same name on the lane.

Knockerdown is an 'area' rather than a particular place, I think! I could not find a sign but there is a pub with that name in the area, hope this will do?

Not on the list but this lane is not far from me and pass it regularly on the way to the Peak District.
I think you can make out what the name is and is it good enough to be added to the list?
Known as something else to a few of the boys but I couldn't say what!!!  <!-- s:violence-smack: -->:violence-smack:<!-- s:violence-smack: -->

Well this one was a bit of a let down, this pub, The Royal Oak, is in Cock Lane in an area called Cuckoo's Knob. Unfortunately there isn't a road sign for either Cock Lane or Cuckoo's Knob and even the Sat Nav just says A346 all the way through. It's in a little hamlet called Wootton Rivers, which is near Marlborough and just a half mile or so from the Ram Alley picture I posted a few weeks ago.

Nevermind, it was a good excuse to waste petrol getting lost in the countryside.

For anyone brave enough to search for 'Bushy Gap' in Northumberland, they will most probably pass by 'The Gusset' farm about a mile away on the same road  :)

Working for the local 'leccy board I have to chuckle at some of the names of switches and substations. There is a Bushy Gap switch and a Bushy Gap s/s and also The Gusset s/s. When I worked in the North West, United Utilities (as they were, now ENW) had a substation in Kendal called 'Dick Intake' s/s. True.

But Pauljobr has found more of them than I have.

Not so much a dodgy place name - but check out the UK's best pub sign. Guess you could make something out of 'The Giant Inn'  if you were inclined to. Also, just around the corner,  Piddle Lane - though you wouldn't want to in his state! Dorset lanes....just perfect for V Strom touring.

The town is in Eire, just inside the border in County Donegal. It is where the start/finish of the Wild Atlantic Way is.
Not sure if we're allowed them if not in England, Wales or Scotland.

roisin meaning rose, dubh meaning dark/black , I do like how you've used both fada's which is the correct way to spell it ,its just non native tongues find it very hard to pronounce , phil lynott wrote a poem/song of the same name ,

Yes, I think the beer was quite probably named after the Thin Lizzy song.

After yesterday's ride was aborted thanks to the Norwegian sabotage incident, I had a fantastic ride this evening. Blue sky above, bluebells all around, perfect conditions for bagging a few dodgy places...

First stop Gay Street, West Sussex. Not easy to find but the countryside round here is beautiful
(http://I.imgur.com/SBk9BLr.jpg)

A little hard to make out the sign in this one but this is Gaywood Farm, Gay Street
(http://I.imgur.com/jap2fjT.jpg)

Don't know if I get another credit for this one but here's Gay Street Lane
(http://I.imgur.com/VFDLAxo.jpg)

On to Balls Cross, West Sussex. I think I've found my new favourite local road, was having so much fun I flew past the sign and kept ignoring opportunities to turn around. Rode up and down a few times before stopping
(http://I.imgur.com/wwkgxOq.jpg) (http://I.imgur.com/HnrsIJr.jpg)

Next stop Cocking. Again, went straight past the main sign coming in to the village, but looking for somewhere to turn around I found an even more amusing sign

Not a bivvy person then !!!!
I am an ardent Match angler, have been for years and years and years, too many to remember, but like bikes, never got fed up with it.

Have been known to do a 'few' overnighters after the Barbel but under an umbrella if raining!
Used to be a big match fisherman in the 70's/80's in the good old days of the rivers & canals but packed up when the kids came along!!
When I started again 15 or so years back didn't like the commercial fishery idea (although I do fish them occasionally) so got into the Barbel.
Still enjoy running a stick float through for a Roach or three.  :thumb:

This is going to hurt.
I live close to a place called MONKS LAKES, and fish a few opens there, one lake has a high stocking of barbel, my god, they are so fit, and in such good condition. a 3lb one fights like a 10lb carp. I have had a fair few weight of them, but must confess, getting them out of a river is so much better.
Title: Re: The Dodgy Place Name Game
Post by: Barbel Mick on July 22, 2016, 17:04:56
Heard of Monks Lakes, pretty famous commercial! I know some say Barbel shouldn't be in still waters but if they're looked after they seem to do OK. I would much prefer catch them from a river though.

Cock bridge Derwent Valley
Another one I tried to find today was on the list was cock bridge , hope  Derbyshire. Not able to  photograph as it's at the bottom of ladybower reservoir that was built in the 1940 's along with cock bridge farm,  derwent and ashopton village . The photo was taken from the  new ladybower bridge and cock bridge would be on the  left as you go over the  bridge to Glossop  ( the snake ). A bit of history and hope you didn't get to bored .

Went out yesterday to see if I could add to the collection. Cockintake on the list is close to one of our regular roads so off we went.
Got a post code (ST102LR) off google maps for Cockintake Farm but on arrival, although a farm at that post code it was called something different! Rode up and down for a mile or so each way but no signs for Cockintake!!  :icon_no:
Oh well. Set off to the Yonderman cafe for an all day breakfast and noticed this on the satnav (no road sign).

At Bottomhouse on the A523 Ashbourne to Leek road. Thought about one for Bottomhouse but road very busy to pull over by roadsign.

After breakfast (now about 13.00) we had a ride round some of the lanes behind the Yonderman and I spotted these on the satnav...........
no road signs again but they were on the same stretch of road between Wardlow & Stoney Middleton, Derbyshire Dales. (S324TH)

Not Brexit related Joe as the front page includes the Republic of Ireland - But we did atleast limit it to the British Isles. Otherwise I will be flooded with pictures of Strom's in a small town in North East Austria.

You take a picture of your V-Strom next to the sign, the sign must be clearly visible.

Didn't head up to Slaggyford due to time, so we thought we'd visit Crackpot as it was closer and it's on the list.

Unfortunately it's a 2 house village with no sign so we went back to the last road sign with the name. Hopefully it'll be sufficient.

Crackpot was described by a resident as once a booming place with a school but judging by the age of the residents that school was demolished many moons ago
One of the houses is a bed and breakfast so at weekends the population may boom from time to time

Where is it? Only Ramsbottom shows on Google maps and tallpaul has got that. There is reference to Upper Ramsbottom on Google but not as a particular town or village, that I can find anyway. If you know it, go get a photo.  :thumb:

The grass has been cut since the first pic.

Annoyingly, After Crackington Haven I passed through a small village called Bush just outside Bude. It was too late to stop, but there was nowhere to pull over for a photo at either of the village signs. Martin, you need to add this to the list! Screen shot from Google Street View for your amusement.

I go through Knockin once a month on the way back to my moms in Stafford.
Of course being a gentlemen I've never been in the "Knockin shop".

Evening ladies and gentlefolkses.
I'd like to lay claim to Helstone and Brown Willy in Cornwall please.

I had a great time asking directions and searching out signs for Brown Willy, fnaar fnaar! Sat navs tend to get a bit lost at times on the wilds of Bodmin Moor, there are still dragons roaming around up there you know🐉
Nearest I could get to proof was a screenshot of the satnav and camera viewer where the public road/gravel track ran out 1.8 miles away. See pic one.
Had I wanted to trespass down the private road, an unimpressed farmer type soon arrived and prevented me from doing so anyway. So hopefully 1.8 miles away will suffice to lay claim to it for now, until some brave soul in Kevlar does a stealth mission to get a bit closer lol.
If anyone does want to try please do bear in mind that the whole area is a SSSI. So do go steady and don't spook the wild horses, sheep, rare butterflies and wild bees; -or the lonely resident Cornishfolks up there [who allegedly still throw stones at aeroplanes] as the blood lines up there ALWAYS need thinning. You have been warned ⚠️😉 No offence intended to any 200th generation Celts who might be reading this, just a bit of banter 😘
Brown Willy is the hill to the left on the far horizon in pic 1 btw. It's the highest point in Cornwall.
  Other pics are from:
• Rough Tor|~pronounced row-tor~| carpark [which is the nearest official parking place to Brown Willy, 7 miles away by foot] showing OS grid ref and info board for there... [and a rather special warning lol 😉...]
• A pic of the bike with Rough Tor in the background taken from the other side of the stream through the ford by the narrow bridge, near where the gravel track becomes a cattle track, down the valley and up the hill a bit, by the new wall, just round the corner from the hairpin bend, and up the trail a bit from the offset, cambered crossroads 🥴 and taken from the end of some lucky recluses drive 😃 #paradise
• And finally the bike in front of the HELSTONE village sign on the A39

Great day out on the WeeBee 🐝🤙🙏🌞
Always remember you're never lost, you're just exploring 😉
  Have a good evening all.
  Ade.

This one hasn't been claimed, so now added to the list. :thumb:

I have already claimed another Cock Lane, which sounds like a right dodgy sentence.

I have managed to claim Hornyold Road in Malvern. My brother lives there and I visited him on my return from my Scotland trip. Just around the corner is Cockshoot Road, which isn't on the list. 2 for the price of 1.

Near York and not on the list. Never sure if its a village or permission to use a dildo.
Maybe the bloke who owns Snap on Tools is from here?

One for the list as I got the bike on the photo. Virginsalley Lane. Ashbourne DE6 2DP
The second one, there was no road sign & it didn't show on the Sat Nav as such, just the B5033. I have a screen shot from Google Maps of our location & showing Cockshead Ln. Ashbourne DE6 2DP
Both roads meet at the location.
The third, not so much dodgy, but unusual? Dobbin Horse Lane. Clifton, Ashbourne DE6 2GL

Found Titty Hill, Sussex today. Unfortunately, there are no signs. It’s just a single track, (dead end), lane leading up to a few houses, where it turns into foot / bridle paths.  Sorry no photo.
