Good suggestion to keep order in your panniers?
« on: November 11, 2023, 22:45:04 »
Got the original panniers for the 1050 instead of the previous Shad ones.

While the original fits far, far better than the Shad, they have two issues:

They are smaller
They open sideway where the Shad opened in the top.

How do you do to keep order inside the panniers and to keep everything from falling out when you open the panniers.

Maybe some velcro bags and then stick them to some adhesive velcro on the inside of the panniers?

Have you considered making use of a cargo net or similar strap arangement, to hold everything in place inside the pannier?  It may require a slight mod.

A possible down side to the cargo net mod, is one would have to remove the pannier and lay it flat each time an item is removed from the pannier.

I think most bike manufacturers panniers are designed with form over function. Stupid shapes that are awkward to pack efficiently plus side opening. My current CB500X Had the Honda panniers when I bought it. They were sold straight away and replaced with GIVI Dolomiti, which are excellent by the way.

I have side openers which I prefer since I usually have a tent across the pillion seat which blocks top openers, I pack camping gear in the low side pannier since I won't need that during the day, clothing etc in the high side pannier as I can just about open that without losing everything and then things I will likely need during the day go in the top box. The factory Suzuki panniers on the Vee have elastic straps which will hold stuff in place if you're careful. In the evening both panniers come off anyway so no issue there.

Yeah, but the latch to open the panniers is still on the top, so you will still cannot block at least all the top.

Check out ebay for secondhand pannier bags. You can usually find some good and cheap. I bought two VFR1200 inners earlier this year for about £20, they were like new and fit perfectly inside the Givi Ali top box. Alternatively just utilise other small bags that you've probably get around the house and some strapping to keep them in.

Ah, the tent is high enough for the key to clear but not to open a lid.

I am thinking that inner bags complicates it even further. but it probably depend on how they are made and if they will fit decent for a long time.

What do you think? Inner bag or small bags velcroed to the inner case wall?

Depends what you're carrying. If it's numerous small things you don't need all of at the same time a one bag option could drive you nuts.

We have Givi Trekker panniers, one is 33l & the other 46l. We have used this sort of bag in them for 10 years now (photo, Sat Nav & glasses case for size comparison). Found them on E-Bay for a few £'s. They are large enough for us to get sufficient clothes into them for at least 2 weeks (we have done 4 weeks with them once). if you can't get sufficient in them you're taking too much!
They sit nicely in the pannier with room for a pair of shoes, wash bag & a few other small bits.
The pannier isn't opened during the day & anything we will require during the day is in the top box or the tank bag.
I have used the stuff sacks the Upt North posted & they work just as well. If you wish to leave your panniers on the bike overnight it is handy for the bag to have a handle, if you take the panniers off it doesn't matter.
I have had a quick search but can't find anything the same but these would work I think? Or  measure the inside of your panniers & add that to a search for "carry on/cabin bag" on E-Bay.

Yeah, mine also got straps inside... but it will not hold the small things I keep inside.

That bag will not fit, but I did find options and both eBay and Amazon that seems to fit.

Maybe I will start with the inner bag solution first and see if this works... it actually seems to be the cheapest solution.

I bought this bag on Amazon. It fits my Givi Dolomiti panniers, the rules for carry on at Easyjet/Ryanair, and is soft enough to expand well and thin enough to take up little room inside the pannier. This I see as a flaw in most motorcycle inner bags.

I used a few of those waterproof bags you can get on eBay, the 10-20L ones. Put certain stuff into each one.
They may still move, but you can corral a few waterproof bags instead of a whole set of loose stuff.

When I had my ArdCases the hessian ‘bags for life’ were a perfect, and I mean perfect, fit in all three dimensions. That was a cheap result? Must try them in my Dolomitis now I think about it…….

Also....when you've got your inners, and all your stuff inside them, write down your packing list on your phone and keep it with you. Makes re-packing in a cold wet field easier if you know what goes where.
