Oil Thread.
« on: May 18, 2013, 20:06:39 »
I have done a search on 'Oil' and get loads of threads on Scotoilers and such like.

Anyway its time for an oil change on my Vee. What oil do the residents of this parish recommend?

Halfrauds Semi Synth 10W-40 Motorcycle oil is a general favourite on the forum. Good price and it's 5 litres instead of the usual 4 litre sized containers that most other manufacturers sell. The oil is rebranded Comma oil and it's decent stuff. You can get Filtrex filters on eBay for £6, they make loads of OEM filters so they're good quality. Alternatively use Hi-Flo filters, they are fairly cheap too and people on here and on the DR-Z forums I frequent are all happy with them.

As kodkod has mentioned, forum members get some nice discounts at Opie Oils. Any 10W-40 semi or fully synthetic motorcycle oil from them should be fine for the Stroms. They sell good oils all round so brand isn't much of an issue unless you have specific preferences.

Speaking to my inside man today- Comma does make the Halfords own brand stuff, and apparently Halfords specified it has to at least meet the same quality as the Castrol version.

(not that I ever doubt what Juv says, but just being nosy when I was chatting today.)

Good to know, I'd now consider putting in a decent bike, I have used it in a GS500 before but that doesn't count. I'm currently running down what was left of the semi synth from years ago in my lawnmower. :)

Halfrauds also sell Mobil Super 2000 10W/40 which is an API SL oil and in a 5 litre can. Was cheaper than the Halfrauds own brand motorcycle oil, only just. I put some in the DR-Z before going to the August bank holiday weekend. I change the oil in the DR-Z every 1500 miles so the best semi synth stuff for the lowest price is what I go for.
