Polish
« on: August 03, 2019, 12:08:20 »
Firstly. I mean the shiny kind, not something from Poland.  :groan:

I'm sure this has been asked before but...what kind of polish do you blokes use to keep things shiny?

I know that there is loads of discussion around Mr sheen/pledge and other household brands etc being damaging to paint or causing issues when touching up. But really....is there any real problem with using household polish on your bikes?

In comparison these polishes are roughly a pound a can and last ages, but something like Maguire's is 11 pound a bottle and lasts a little bit longer.

I'm looking for recommendations on some products to keep my new bike shiny and beautiful. Any suggestions are welcome.

I only use silicone free polish, usually Farecla brand, as silicones wreak havoc when you're trying to paint stuff as I find myself doing fairly often in & around the garage.

Cut back any marks with G10 finishing compound, then 2/3 coats of Wax Top and, if I'm really going for it, then Black Top hand glaze to finish it off.
Looking at their website suggests they've changed the names and they're maybe now G3 Wax and G3 Glaze.

I leave them dirty...

It's worked great for the last 10 years.
I've only needed 11 replacment bikes.

On a serious note, when I have had the bi-annual compulsion to clean I used the Demon Wash spray liquid polish from Halfords.
Works fine and a 1.5ltr bottle lasts 5 years (for me)

Mr Sheen and other similar spray polishes are brilliant for a bike that's used regularly, its very convenient and cheap especially if the missus has left it out somewhere with a duster  :) I've washed, microfibre'd and polished a bike in 30 minutes if I'm in a hurry and just want the bike to look decent, used furniture polish for over 30 years and will continue to do so!

If I have plenty of time its a different story though and usually involves lots of dismantling and loss of fingerprints

IMHO Polish removes surface material and will in time wear away paint. If Mr Sheen is not abraisive then it is not polish and it's fine to use. I use wax if I can.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.
