Advice please - wondering if to go back to standard can
« on: April 11, 2014, 20:00:18 »
Would be grateful for advice from more experienced Glee owners.

I bought my Glee second hand,  and love it. Except the exhaust noise from the GPR can the previous owner put on it!  Yeah, I know some folks like everyone within a half mile radius to know you're around, but I find the noise a bit too much, even now I've put the baffle back in. So I'm thinking about putting the original can back on.

Only I've seen somewhere that I'll lose a bit of power and some mpgs. Is that right?

Anyone got any wisdom on this? Thanks!

Like this http://www.gpr-motorcycle-exhausts.co.u ... bonox.html  ?
Should have a baffle and a db reducer . The baffle is cone shaped and fits in the can at the end where it connects to the link pipes . The db reducer fits in the end of the can with a circlip .

db reducer  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DB-KILLER-PER ... 0746784485

You should check to see if one's fitted .

Yes,  that's the baby. 95% sure it's got both the baffle and db killer in. I'll double check. The previous owner had removed the baffle,  so that is certainly in as I replaced it!

Faffing about with baffles and secondary baffles and killers and such. Meh! Stick the original can back on, sell the grope one on eBay and buy petrol with the money. :thumb:

Did you have to cut back the original manifold tube to fit the new pipework? Looks like there's a length of hacksawed off tube left in the original pipework ...

First thing I do when I buy a used bike, stick the original bits back on and eBay the junk, it reduces the cost of the bike too. Got £100 for a Beowulf Stubby and link pipe that was on the GSXF.

Not looking at pics - it's on the pipework of the old can stuck in the back of the garage!  I'll dig it out tomorrow and post a photo ( I'm sat in a train right now! )

Had a nice run with my GPR system on today, nice sound, so before removing I'd check you have all the baffles in place.

Nothing needed to be cut to fit it, though if you bought a Suzuki system to replace it, there'd be a few bits of hardware needed as well.

The GPR is a three quarter system, no cutting, just uses your stock header pipes.

Use ear plugs else the wind noise will eventually have you too deaf to hear any can, even if it was the stock wheezer.

Ear plugs, baffle out and then who gives a s**t.

Seriously though I have a beowulf aftermarket can. It only has a baffle in the rearmost end. I bought a quiet baffle from the manufacturer to make it a little quieter when on a long run as the loud noise was getting annoying.
On a shorter blast, baffle out makes it a straight through can and soulds fanny-tastic. But can attract attention of the fuzz.

Worth a call to GPR and see if they do a quiet baffle.

Or bribe Locky to extend your current baffle, his bike sounds great even though it's quieter than I prefer.

What a dick! The cut off bit of pipe was in fact gasket tubing!

So .... back to the original question - any views on the power/mpg loss if I go back to the standard can? More tempted to try now I know it's a half hour job (famous last words!)

I'd think MPG will be largely similar, perhaps a teensy bit less, to the tune of 1 to 3 MPG at the worst. It might decrease if you twist it more to hear the sound of the better pipe. In some cases MPG can even increase by changing the exhaust. Power/torque will go down slightly or move slightly in the rev range if you put the more restrictive standard exhaust back on. An aftermarket exhaust system will usually be more free flowing with increasing diametre piping towards the end can. This all helps power/torque and the helps with the bike revving easier. The GPR pipe is definitely one of the better designed systems, you'll likely feel a significant difference if you put the old exhaust back on. The difference with just putting a different end can on my old Wee was already very noticeable, it wasn't even a 3/4 system such as the GPR. I've gone and bought a GPR recently so that I can fit it once my bike has been put back together. If it's too loud for me (very unlikely) then I will do what Locky did and extend the baffle a bit. Extending the baffle will add an extra bit of restriction, but no where near the level that the stock exhaust would.

Do you have a pic of your baffle mods, Locky? Sounds like that may be the way to go.

Otherwise I'll just whack to old can back on and try it out.....
