Title: hay fever.
Post by: colin on April 25, 2021, 10:39:14
I am 66 years old and suddenly 2 summers ago I started suffering from Hay fever, It is worse this time with constant sneezing. nose running, sore itchy eyes.  I have been taking Tesco hay fever & allergy tablets but
don't seem to work.  Can anybody recommend any other remedy?

One bit of advice I can give (not medical) is to smear a bit of Vaseline around the eyes and under & just inside the nose. This catches (some anyway) the pollen and can help a little.
Other than that go to the doctor & get something on prescription, you might need something a little stronger than 'over the counter' stuff?

Ask for a telephone consultation with your doctor, tell the doctor you have tried all sorts of anti-histamine treatments without any success and ask if you can have a prescription for Fexofenadine tablets.I had the same problem as yourself when I reached about 70, and I was visiting my cousin in Oz in the October which is their springtime and my hay fever got really bad.My cousin recommended this medication and you can buy it at a chemists in Oz after talking to the pharmacist, it worked really well and I brought a pack back with me.It is only available on prescription in the UK, my doctor didn’t want to prescribe initially but relented eventually,I think the problem is its expensive and they are reluctant to spend money out of their budget.

Beconase spray can be very helpful.

in 2014 I was struck with sore eyes.  Much like this  :bawl: I could not see in anything but low light. In normal daylight I had to wear dark glasses I went to my optician but they could offer no cause or remedy.
I went to my GP he sent me to hospital
Hospital specialist could find nothing wrong and prescribed some goo to put in my eyes - hopeless
Then on a rainy day when I could tolerate and drive a friend said he had forgotten to take his hay fever medication and his eye was sore.
I went to my local Morrisons and bought some own brand "one a day" Hay-Fever remedy tablets with 'Loratadine'. (same ingredients and % as the expensive branded type)
Within 2 days I could see again and drive / ride :happydance:
I told my doctor and the optician and guess what?  they said it is a coincidence and hay-fever does not have that effect on people
Every year I wait until the allergy strikes again and then I take the tablets for the next three to four months.
Leylandii trees and their high dust pollen in my own garden is my nemesis.

If you can manage to get a perscription I would highly recommend Fexofenadene Hydrochloride. They come as a single tablet per day in 120mg or 180mg doses. I use it every year and it is brilliant.
Cheers Ken

Thanks.  A lot of very helpful information. The Tesco hay fever tablets contain cetirizine hydrochloride and don't seem to work. This afternoon I tried Otrivine sinusitis nose spray and it dried my nose up for about 3 hours. also very dry mouth. I will enquire at doctors tomorrow about Fexofenadine Hydrochloride

I had really bad Hay Fever up until I was about 30. Then my Doctor prescribed Desloratadine tablets and a Mometasone nose spray. All good now.

If you look at the various brands there are generally two different 'active' ingredients. One is loretadine and the other is cetrrazine (Probably got the spellings wrong). Even supermarket own brands usually have both types on sale.
If you've tried one, and that didn't work, try the other. I found loretadine didn't work for me but ceterazine was very effective after a few days.

I think you are correct.  I have been taking Cetirizine hydrochloride and they haven't worked. So I purchased some Loratadine and within 5 hours It is a lot better. stopped sneezing. nose has dried up but still got sore dry eyes. but feel a lot better. will probably improve over the next few days.
