Diagnostic tools
« on: August 30, 2014, 19:34:08 »
Do I need a special diagnostic tool to set the TPS on an 2005 KLV? I see on youtube a bloke setting this on a TL1000 using a tool/switch to flag up idicator bars on the clocks.  Is there an easy way to do this without a diagnostic tool?

Search for "dealer mode" instructions for a DL1000 on this forum. Once you have the bike in dealer mode the indicator shows up on the display. Dealer mode is activated by simply connecting to contacts on a specific connector.

Here is the special tool needed to put the bike in dealer mode.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

You want to use the paper clip in the connector to connect the White/Red & Black/White wires.

The connector is tucked in the left side painted plastic cover under the seat on the KLV1000/DL1000. The smaller one in the following picture.

OK thanks. So does that automatically display one of the 3 level bars on the clocks to set the TPS as I've seen on the TL1000?

In dealer mode, you should see a -C00 on the display at idle(set to somewhere between 1100-1300rpm). You want to set the TPS so the leading dash goes up somewhere between 1500-1800rpm. The rpms need to be held steady for a half second before the dash will show its true position so you can't just keep adding throttle until the dash raises. The raising point will have been before the point you see it go up. You'll need to increase the revs in steps.

OK I'm fairly confident I can do this now with your advice thank youfor the help. Next question then is about how to sync the throtlle bodies. Is this a job I can do without any special kit?

You need a manometer, but you can make one with a meter stick, some clear plastic pipe, a few cable ties and some coloured fluid (I used blue coolant fluid, don't drink it!)

Otherwise you can use some vacuum gauges, fairly cheap on eBay.

In short, you'll connect your manometer or vacuum gauges to the vacuum nipple on each throttle body and then tweak a specific screw on the throttle bodies to ensure they both suck equally.

The service manual shows how to do this in detail, get it from the downloads section.

There is also a Search function on the forum, almost everything you could possibly ask has been asked before :)
