Aftermarket sealing
« on: August 11, 2015, 20:07:47 »
Quick bit of advice blokes.
I have fitted the mtc system on my 650, it is blowing slightly where the can fits on to the pipe. It needs a little bit of sealing. Is there anything people would recommend over heat resistant silicon?

A good smear of silicone should do the trick. Did my recent exhaust fit this way and no problems. Make sure the muffler is pushed right on.

What's wrong with exhaust assembly paste?

It is used to stick parts together but unfortunately cracks with heat and gaps let gasses through - it is not a seal. I have used silicone for many years with great success. I only tried paste once!

I just used some Holt exhaust jointing paste but must admit it wasn't nice to work with and seems to set hard which I can't see dealing with the bike vibration brilliantly well. See how it goes but it may have to come off again and be siliconed

That's me told, then! Used it once, must have been lucky. Will try silicone - doesn't it burn?

No silicons melting point is 1400c so no if it is straight silicon it won't.

Surely the can shouldn't blow where it mates to the link pipe, wether it's an interference fit or sliding fit with a clamp.
Have you contacted mtc?

A steel on steel connection is never going to seal without something. Mine was blowing a touch from one of the crush slots
