Wonder Shorts
« on: March 05, 2023, 22:51:40 »
So sometime earlier in the year I saw an ad on faceache - about shorts with inbuilt silicone pads for motorcyclists. Hmmmmmm, I thought, that looks like a spiffing idea - so I looked on flea bay and saw a pair of cycling shorts that looked identical and bought them - £15. They looked quite encouraging, with lots of silicone pads plus the renowned ‘moisture management’ vents…. I was truly looking forwards to my future journeys with these wonder shorts.

Today was a ride-out so it was a great opportunity to try these magical shorts…. I was riding today a bit over 5 hours total. 90 mins each way to Edinburgh then two hours riding around Fife, and on the way home I had a deep conversation with myself about these shorts.

What a load of old rowlocks….! My bum still went to sleep after an hour on the renowned Suzuki saddle, and whenever I stopped and got off, it felt like I was wearing a giant nappy. Most awkward. When I got home and removed my many layers of clothing I put the shorts straight into the bin. Another waste of money. Looks like it’s back to using the old whoopee cushion again…

Maybe cycling shorts aren't the same as motorcycling wonder shorts? (We don't have to do a load of pedalling).

Why not go the traditional way many motorcyclists go to get more padding 'down there', involving eating way too many cooked breakfasts and a load of pies?

I tried some specific to motorcycling. Giant nappy that didn't help numb bum.

I use an AirRider inflatable seat now. That works well.

You need Gel in your seat. It's the best. I only have a skinny wee bum but even I don't go numb in the bum. Putting Gel in your seat is kind of like a fetish. It seems strange and quite bazar but when you've tried it, your in. Hook line and sinker.    :thumb:

I use these https://www.adventurebikeshop.co.uk/moto-skiveez/ they appear to very expensive now though. Whilst they don't eliminate the numbness entirely they certainly allow more riding until the fidgeting starts.

I wear them back to front when I visit the local swimming pool.

Or rather I did, only another twenty years and I'll be allowed back again.

I have a Corbin seat which I put on for summer, but not winter because it’s leather and has a lot of stitching and when it rains the seat just becomes like a big sponge and my arse gets wet for days afterwards.

I keep the stock seat on for winter as it’s plastic and doesn’t act like a sponge. I’ve got one of those little whoopee cushion things which is good but I forget to put it on. I thought the gel pad shorts would be worth a try as you never know.

Lesson learnt, but if anyone is thinking of trying it - don’t waste your money.

If you want to spend a little longer in the saddle you can't beat a mesh seat cover.

Had one for years that I've adapted to fit the last 3 bikes I've owned, it easily doubles if not triples the amount of saddle time before you start fidgeting.

Mesh seat cover all the way, bought mine for Europe in the heat wave and haven't taken it off since.

Mine came from these blokes and fits beautifully.

+1 for a mesh seat cover.

How much do you think it would be for buttock implants?

Another vote for the mesh seat covers, but we had to take ours off & revert back to the sheepskin. Deb found the mesh a bit slippery on the pillion, especially with waterproofs on. The sheepskin is good winter & summer, unless it rains of course. The mesh was too cold in the winter making certain bits smaller than they already are!!  :GRR:
