Glee clutch cable
« on: January 02, 2021, 15:13:48 »
Question for the team, has anyone seen or have a link to a new replacement clutch cable for a DL650 AL2.I have searched and searched but can only find OE cables at Suzuki’s outrageous prices.

I feel your pain but of all the parts on your Vstrom a clutch cable isn't worth scrimping on.

I bought a spare for my F8 GSA .... Ouch ..

What about something like this Ian?
This is £10 from Halfords but you can buy them cheaper from e-bay & other on line places.

I have seen these before Mick and have a throttle cable repair kit already.I kept a spare cable in the back box of the Wee for several years but it is now redundant as I have the Glee.If you are on tour (hopefully) it is much easier to just swap the cable for a new one than start repairing your original and it takes virtually no room laid flat in the box.If anyone has a spare for a Glee could they possibly measure the inner and outer cable total lengths for me please.

Clutch cable just snapped on mine, I was just wheeling her out to give her a wash, better it happened now than on the road somewhere,
any advice on what the best replacement cable is and where to get it?

Hello Vstroman, just for interests sake, how many miles do you have on the bike, assuming it is the original cable ?

Thanks but I think the one for the Glee is different, ordered one today, expensive but no other option. if it lasts another 8 years I suppose it's not too bad.

I had another look at mine today, ran a finger along the shiny part next to the engine end clutch lever and found a sharp splinter, further investigation shows about 10 tiny shards of wire.So changed it with another one I had. Thanks again Timangus.Had another look at buying a new one,£50 plus postage.Called a local(ish) Suzuki dealer, no reply they are closed on Mondays,so I left a message,we shall see tomorrow if they call back.I would have thought a cable would last longer that 20k.miles.Although I suppose it depends on its environment and maintenance.

Lots of factors that decide the life span of a clutch cable ... :)

That sounds like the same place mine went Ian. I changed mine at c. 53,000 miles but I had noticed it had started to fray down by the engine about a year before (I'd guess c. 46,000 miles). When I swapped it, there wasn't much holding it together  :shy:

Did you have to remove and bodywork to fit the new cable or can it be done simply by taping the end of the old cable to the new one and pulling it through into place?

I removed the hand-guard and dis-connected the cable at the handlebar end,I then removed the sprocket cover and removed the clutch arm from its spline(mine was marked previously so I only noted where it was positioned). This then let me remove the cable  from the arm without kinking it.I then used two very small tie wraps to connect the inner cables together, and then carefully pulled and wiggled them through,I only had one glitch, it was when the cable got stuck behind the coil,I had to get it to a position where the two inner cables could be slid out into a better position and it went through OK.It’s quite tight when the new cable top adjuster goes through the bracket just above the radiator, you just need a bit of patience but it just wiggles through.
Two Wheel Centre (Suzuki dealer in Mansfield Woodhouse) called me back this morning, and I ordered a new cable,£48 (ouch),good service, the stores person was very polite and apologised about the price and he was aware that no-one makes an aftermarket cable for the Glee.He will call or message me when the new one arrives from Suzuki and I will can it.

Mine was tied to the radiator hose near the coil so worth checking if yours is. But other than that, I did more or less the same as Ian
