Title: MRA or Givi Airflow ?
Post by: Robster66 on July 08, 2018, 20:31:11
Hello everyone,

Just got a strom 1k, generally love the bike however, in addition to the low speed throttle response, the standard screen is killing me !
No matter what speed or position, the buffeting and noise are unbearable. I wear a Schuberth S2 with plugs ( a quiet helmet ) and my ears are ringing.
Is one of the two options appreciably better than the other ? The Givi looks a bit goofy, but I’d be happy to fit it if it cures the torture !

Cheers

Screens are a very personal thing. What works for one doesn't necessarily work for another. I tried a Givi airflow and didn't like it. I fitted the flip up blade from an MRA screen to the stock strom screen and it was perfect for me. The best thing to do is see if another member local to you with an alternative screen is willing to let you try it on your bike before you buy. It could save you a lot of cash in the long run. This is a perennial quest for many owners, so you're in good company.

Funny you say you wear a Schubert,  me too , and I find it noisy with a screen compared to my open face.
On my naked 1290 sdr it is great though...
The givi is a very good screen, with loads of adjustment, I love mine and would recommend it for your bike.
The low rev thing is easy sorted with an xtre , by healtec, and it has other advantages in that you set into fourth gear, takes ten seconds, and you get full power in the other gears.

Oh, an Paul, a perennial quest is some sort of plant I think, what's that to do with a screen... lol

The givi  is in some folks eyes ugly, but it works well enough, there is also the option of using BMW  side wind deflectors, they make a big difference too, I am fitting some to mine, there is a thread on here somewhere on the subject.

don't know about the MRA but I put a givi airflow on my 2015 DL1000 yesterday and can tell you it makes a massive difference even on the lowest height. Havent done many miles yet but so far very impressed. I don't think it looks that bad either to be honest, I was expecting worse!

That being so paul, by the laws of logic, so am I then! lol

Being smarter than me is nowt to brag about...!  lol

On topic, the madstad bracket is a good option. I have one on my XT1200 and it gives a lot of adjustability.

I think VSTROMS are ugly bikes, so an ugly screen compliments it perfectly. It doesn’t bother me as I can't see it when I am riding it.

Funny you say you wear a Schubert,

Sorry to hijack the thread but with regards the tre, I thought setting 5 was supposed to be the best. Is that not the case? I only fitted it yesterday and havent tried other settings but so far 5 seems pretty lively in the first 3 gears.

Try fourth gear, no top end restrictions,it's the only gear that us full fat right through.

Cheers everyone, all advice noted, think I’m leaning towards the Givi, an ugly screen on an ugly bike isn’t really a deal breaker I suppose!

Rob, nail on the head, but these bikes look better the more they get travel worn, they get character!
Do look up about the BMW  wind reflectors on here, if you can't find it let me know and I will search it out.

Wasn't it Bosnjo that fitted the winglets?

My Givi screen arrived today, haven't had time to fit it to the bike yet, but looks canny out of the box, sat on the carpet! Got it cheap from italy, too (far cheaper than MRA and madstad) Mingarelli on ebay, arrived well protected in 3 boxes (russian-doll-style!), only took a week or so. I'll post on here tomorrow after I have tried it out! :thumb:

I have both for my strom. I use the givi in spring autumn and the mra in summer.  The givi works much better. I'm in Scotland at the minute and because for the good weather I left the mra on, regret that now. I thought my bike felt better in 5 gear on the tre than 4 th, maybe just my imagination.  A g2 throttle tamer helps too.
My old vstrom is not going the best over here, don't like the heat and lots of vibration coming through, feels real rough. And I think my seat foam has gone, my arse is killin me!

I have both, I have used both, they both work. Currently with Givi as I'm a tall rider. Whichever option only buy the clear version.

Not had much luck with the Givi Airflow on my 2017 DL650, nor with the MRA Xcreen, despite playing about for hours with various settings and even shimming out the bottom fittings a centimeter or so. Got rid of the entire screen the other day and it was a revelation, all that clean air.... Looking for a shortie screen now so I can modify it to make it as small as possible!

Try shimming out the top, longer bolts will be needed, worked well for me on all three 650 Vstroms I've had  :thumb:

Hello,

If anyone would like to try either a Givi Airflow or an MRA X-screen on their 2011-2016 DL650, let me know. I've got both and am in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. You can pop in and try them no problem. Both are much better than stock - neither is as good as I would like it to be ! Currently battling with the hundreds of possible positions for the MRA - not found the sweet spot yet !

Regards

Tim

I'd like to try an MRA Vario touring screen.  The Givi just isn't working for me as still getting buffeting at 60mph+  It's lovely up till those speeds.  That's on a 2014 650 though.
