Ignition key 2017 DL650
« on: April 11, 2024, 08:50:36 »
The key I regularly use has decided it will no longer release the steering lock although it performs normally between OFF and ON and moves freely between the L and P positions. There is no sign of any damage.  Fortunately my spare and similarly original key still works perfectly. Any suggestions?

Of course I don’t mean 1977 - it’s 2017!!

Perhaps you can have another key or two cut from your working spare key being the template. Keep in mind that any newly cut keys would have to be transponder programed to the ECU to bypass the security feature and this may be expensive.
Alternatively, since the original key only fails to unlock the steering, a less expensive option is to have dulpicate key cut using your spare key as the template. The only down side I foresee of this option is, that you will then need to carry both keys on the key ring. Basically one key to unlock the steering lock (non transponder) and the other, the stock key to defeat the ECU security that allows the bike to start.

Too simple but, clean the barrel of the ignition lock with lots of WD40, then let it dry. Clean it again with switch cleaner, let it dry, it won't take long. then graphite powder on both sides of the key and work it into the ignition, you may want to repeat but it doesn't take much powder.  :thumb:

This worked for me, I think there was dirt stopping the key going all the way in that was the problem?

As I said "Seems too simple".  :auto-dirtbike:

You may be able to buy this cheaper but I have seen it advertised for a lot more.

An experienced local locksmith / key cutting place can cut and program (clone) a transponder key for the DL650. Get your spare cloned and then use that one and keep your OG.

If you take both keys with you, they can clone the code off the (existing, damaged key), and copy the bitting off the pristine spare key. Mine cost £40 and after they got the key blank, it was done within 20 mins.

(The only idea behind cloning the bad key is that then you have two unique keys, rather than two keys that have the same code... not that I believe they can erase a transponder code from the ECU anyway, even with Suzuki tools)

Thanks for helpful responses. Of its own accord, and perversely, my ignition key has decided that it’s happy to work normally after all.  Why I know not but in future I’ll give it a good dusting with graphite powder and carry a spare key in my jacket.

I would absolutely not carry both keys with you. If you were to lose both, you're stuck, and potentially needing to replace the ECU and other locks.

At the very least, get a non-chipped key blank cut with your existing key so you can unlock the ignition (holding the troublesome key near the antenna), but I bet that it'll be not much more money to get a proper key cut and chip cloned, then you have 3 keys.

A blank key should be around £20-£30 a couple of quid to get it cut and a local Suzuki dealers should charge 1/2 hour labour to program it in.

As has been said, if you loose both keys, its ecu and lock set replacement £1000+ in parts plus about 4-5 hours labour to fit.

We used to have a bloke ring up every few weeks and ask for a spare key for a Honda VT750 he'd picked up cheap with no keys... every time he'd get the same price, around £1600
That wasuntil the price went up to £1700 with a Honda price rise and he complained to the boss who hold him to get the work done or stop calling.  lol
Bottom line is it's a massive expense and pita if you loose both keys, just get a 3rd one cut and programmed.

I'd just get one cloned. £40 job done.

What's the Suzuki rate for half an hour of labour? £50-60? Plus you'll need a proper Suzuki key, the ones the local key cutting places can get won't work with Suzuki programming it.
