Brakes starting to bind
« on: January 13, 2020, 16:05:58 »
Hello,

Quick one for the people who do their own maintenance, with all the salt on the road, my front brakes feel like they are starting to bind a little so planning on stripping them off to give them a good clean.

What type of grease would you recommend for the sliders/pad back plates.

Thanks

copper slip .ideally strip them down completely, check for pitting on the pistons and dress accordingly or replace.

There will be corrosion in the dust seal ,clean that out then fit new seals.

On the vstrom calipers it's normally corrosion build up between the lower rubber boot and the caliper squeezing the bottom slider reducing movement.
Only use copper slip on the caliper bolts and retaining pin but some people smear a little on the back of their pads and lithium grease on the sliders.
If your pistons are seized, they will need to be removed, cleaned with new seals
Chief trouble maker 🙂

Great thanks, I read somewhere online not to use the lithium grease on the breaks so thought I would ask what everyone is using.

I don’t think it’s anything too serious, basically 2 winters of ignoring them, the front is starting to bind a little, once going it’s OK until you leave the bike for couple days, time for a good clean and some new grease.

Once that’s done, unfortunately look to replace all bolts that showing corrosion as I was late at getting the ACF out this year, won’t be making that mistake again.

If you take the seals out a bit of red rubber grease on the piston helps too.
