2004 V strom 650 starting/ignition issues.
« on: July 01, 2018, 19:05:01 »
Hello all,

My 2004 V strom has started having intermittent starting/ignition issues.

Occasionally when I turn the ignition key to the on position and start the bike the rev counter and speedo needles don't move. The clock on the central display goes off and all four indicators plus tail lamp light up, the headlight does not come on. When I move off the speedo needle doesn't budge, the rev counter needle moves intermittently. Performance does not seem to be affected though I am loathe to ride the bike in this state.

At other times when I start the bike it functions normally.

Any ideas please?

Thank you;

Dicky

Hi , sounds like the large block connector behind the left part or the fairing.

This block connector sometimes burns out some of the pins . Pull it apart to check .

+1 for what Kwackboy said.

Thank you Graham62.

The bike is fairly new to me. I've had it for three months but haven't yet got a manual. Could anybody please tell me what the long black box with lots of wires coming out of it is behind the battery under the seat? ECU?

Cheers,

Dicky

It sounds like you have located the ECU. The ECU is located (rubber mounted) between the battery and the plastic tray.

Update. I wiggled the connector situated behind the headlight inside the left hand fairing and everything worked normally. I'm assuming this is the connector that kwackboy and Graham62 were referring to. I'll take it apart and have a closer look at it later.

Thank you very much.

When you've got it sorted cover it with a bit of bicycle inner tube and tie wrap the ends. :thumb:

Pulled the connector apart and found one of the pins had indeed burnt out. Cleaned said pin and put the connector back together covering it all with a rubber sleeve as advised.

Thank you for the advice. :thumb:

:thumb: If you've ever got the tank and airbox off I would suggest that you do the rubber sleeve job on the wires behind the radiator as well.  Glad you sorted it out.  :thumb:

The dash/instruments are purely a display and the bike will run fine without them, just no low oil pressure warning which is quite imprtant!! Though my Dominator didn't have one fromm new!! :icon_exclaim:
