Title: It's not pretty.....but it works
Post by: edstrom on September 23, 2022, 22:13:14
Like I said, it's not pretty but, here's my fix to the dreaded buffeting and the deafening wind which, I just couldn’t take anymore. It was ruining it for me.

I’d say it's probably 95% fixed. It’s transformed the bike for me. Just a little bit left on the arms and shoulders coming from the mirrors which I’ve already ordered replacements. Just some cheap ones from Amazon (evil company I know, sorry). But honestly, if it doesn’t work, I could live with that as it’s barely noticeable and, well, I am on a motorbike. A bit of wind is to be expected. It’s just pure curiosity now as I’m already happy to be able to see straight cruising at 80 lol (all smooth in the triples too:).

I’ll call this a successful prototype and work on aesthetics in the future. Got plenty of Perspex left, 4mm thick, from B&Q and I only paid a tenner for it as there was a big crack in it (perfect for my needs lol). Held on by Velcro bought from the Range, roughly 8 quid. Had the heat gun already to bend it.

Thoughts? lol

"The Lexan Lectern"!

If it works, fair play. The Givi Airflow isn't exactly a stunner.

I'm extremely happy with the results

I think you are to be congratulated Ed. I'm surprised in a market place where aftermarket screens are both accepted and plentiful that someone hasn't taken fairing extensions further. It's nothing new afterall, Honda offered oem optional deflectors going back 25 or so years on its tourers.
Well done fella, room for thought.

I applaud your actions to reduce buffeting which can be so irritating.
The bodywork and screen compresses the air in front of a bike and that pressure is then sucked into the negative pressure areas behind the screen. Think of it as a draught. It comes over the top, around the sides, and even up from below.  Bike designers produce a shape that conforms to the contemporary shape of beauty ( think beak  ### )  The trend towards narrowing the frontal aspect and then hanging a beak on the front does, IMHO, make the buffeting problem worse.  I'd like to see the progressive versions of V Stroms  subjected to wind tunnel tests to see which was better.

I like the headlight guard, where did you buy that.

Excellent work, I really appreciate self engineered solutions. :thumb:

That's an interesting mod.  Always worth a bit of experimentation.
I'm one of the people that the Givi airflow doesn't work for.  I found it horrible, whatever I did with it.

Yeah I did some research and found that it was hit and miss. Just didn't work for some folk and I didn't wan't to spend that money for it to have no effect.

I honestly don't remember. I want to say Amazon (evil company I know). It's not so much of a guard as an asthetic thing. I just thought it looked cool. I don't think it'll do much protecting to be honest lol

Take the screen off ... worked on my last 2 bikes .. that and mirror extenders and buffet free .. but well done for your solution ... Engineering in Action !  👍

A great effort, I have been blighted by buffeting on a number of bikes in the past and have resorted to 'less appealing aesthetic options' but if they work then that's fine by me. I can get people going for low/no screens to get rid of the buffeting, but I want to sit in a bubble of still, quiet air (or as close as possible) without windblast. For the record it doesn't look ugly to me  :thumb:

I had terrible helmet shake on the varadero.. I wasn't prepared to spend 100÷ quid on a screen that may not work.. got got one of these off the "Jungle site"...
I had it high up like that, but hated the look and in the dark it wasn't great to be looking through.. so lowered it as far as poss and took a leak out of modern bikes with this aerofoil gap..
It now looks a lot better and still works perfectly.. give it a try..
Will add a pic when I find it..

I think I have it tilted a bit further back now..  not quite in parallel with the screen.. airflow it clean and rattle free..

The Varadero came with a tall Givi screen, which was great in daylight on the low setting.

But as it was tinted I didn't get on with at night and seeing as I was commuting on the bike it was starting to get annoying.
I did buy a Powerbronze standard shape & size one, but that cracked around the mount points in under 2 years.  :icon_batterup:
Found a 2nd hand original screen in the parts bin in work, lucky, a few scratches, but that worked until I found a CBF1000 MRA vario touring screen on Ebay. - the mount spacing is the same as the Varadero (03-12)
