Monolock top box
« on: April 25, 2025, 21:38:49 »
Has anyone here who is relatively near Oxford have a monolock top I could try on my rack?

I just want to make sure it is what I’ve been told before I spend the money on a topbox.

TIA

If I have it correct, your 650 is a 2013 / L3 model?

As suggested, post a pix of the rack on your bike or have a look at the pix in https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=39532.0 and https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=43764.0 to see whether you have the same or similar rack installed on your ride.

Newmp, you really need to get some pictures up of what's on your bike at the moment. Hopefully it's a Monokey plate, not Monolock. A much bigger choice of boxes.

And much more expensive!   I've been using the monolock one's for years with no trouble at all. Currently using a Chinese made box which is a good colour match to my white Veek, fits the Givi monolock plate and cost 25 quid!

More expensive possibly because they're made stronger.

My monokey boxes can take 10kg, the monolock one I had could only take 3kg.

I've put a lot more than 3kg in mine with no problems.
What I liked about the monolock was I could run a small 26ltre box for solo riding or the larger 47ltre for two up or weekends away.

I don’t seem to be able to get the picture uploaded … may be my age or I’m technically deficient

Have you seen the instructions of how to do it?
https://www.v-strom.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=33022.0

If you're following those & it still won't upload then try to make the file smaller before posting ....... plus, the text box needs something entering. Just posting the photo won't work. Even a full stop will do it.  :thumb:

Monolock type.
Can't see any makers name on the plate. My plate is a Givi  and my Chinese box fits straight on and comes with it's own universal plate also.

That wouldn't be a Givi/Kappa plate, they don't have screw on cover plate and they do tend to put their name on EVERYTHING  lol

that said, a Givi box may fit, but I know people have fitted boxes to plates that they weren't designed for and they seemed to lock in on to find out the thing came off while traveling.

My pal bought a Givi top box from Sportsbikeshop and it came with plate inside it.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

Yes, Brockett would be correct, the Monolock boxes (smaller, light duty) will normally come with a generic plate which is fine if you have some sort of rack on the back of the bike.

The Monokey are heavier duty and will generally require some sort of bike specific adapter mounts or rack and there are various plates then, from the old wingrack setup, to the simple old semi universal M3 plate, the newer M5M and the M8/M9 Alu plates.
I've got an oddball M11 tubular plate I found in the bin in Thunderroad years ago.

Loads of different setups - I would try the Givi bike configurator on their website to make sure your getting something suitable and correctly fitting for the bike.

Wise Welsh words. The newer Strom fitments have a diagonal brace underneath to help cut down on the wobbling that was noticeable on my glee. Much better design.

The classic early models had a solid metal rack- much better.

You should see the box om my Varadero bounce around when loaded on it's flimsy plastic rack.
Not a bad as the FJR1300 or XRV750's (that propper Africa Twin) that used to split regularly

Whilst that universal plate looks to be "no name", my Kappa universal monolock plate had two screws holding the top cover on, and a small round logo in the centre of that, that was it!
